Bike riding, in particular mountain biking is a very effective way of getting fit. Great cardiovascular workout. Not only very good for you but fun too.
Along with riding in the bush, I had been commutting on my mountain bike to work which is about a 35 kilometer round trip, 4 times a week for about 5 years. Unfortunately I fell off my bike and broke it (a very sad day), so I bought a motorbike and have now lost all my fittness and gained a few extra kg's.
I'll never get that kind of fitness back now, have became lazy and regret giving up the excercise. I could not recommend bike riding enough, give it a try.

One thing I'd recommend as well is if you like fried food, grill or oven bake it where possible. That way you're not giving up the foods you love, just changing how they're prepared. It may not be quite as nice as the fried product but should be close enough hopefully!

Losing weight is pretty easy really - make sure you burn more calories than you consume.
My tips are:
1. Try to avoid Take Aways as much as possible (of all varieties - Indian, Fish & Chips, Chinese, McDonalds, Pizza etc)
2. Try to cut out unnecessary snacks - e.g. if you have a chocolate bar at 11am then stop having it, if you have a snack when you get home from work / school then don't have it.
3. Ensure that you do exercise at least twice a week. Try to find something you like to do - e.g. swimming, cycling, rock climbing. For example, if you go to school cycle rather than get a lift. If you don't then orgainise an activity for a couple of days a week.
4. You are much more likely to succeed with any exercise regieme you decide upon if you go regularly (e.g. on a certaion day each week) and go with a partner (friend, family, workmate - whoever).
5. Cardiovascular exercise is excellent for raising fitness levels, but if you want to define your muscles then Anerobic exercise, such as weight training, will build up your muscles. Ideally you need a combination of both.
It is amazing how something simple will make a significant difference given a few weeks.
