More apparent with the HPM-70 than the DS970.

come on guys, its not because of the hpm or whatever, if you put your ears on the phone's speaker you can hear it.
i have a 200w system at home on a sound blater digital audio card and even on that i can hear that static noise you are talking about

I'm not sure I understand? Do you mean that you connect the phone to your 200w system and then you hear the noise? If I try to listen to the phone speaker as you suggest, I can not hear the static I tried to describe. I can only hear a general background noise.

The static I'm experiencing when listening with headphones is not continuous, it's more like listening to a carbonated beverage . I've tried the HPM-70 and koss porta-pro. The static is there on both headphones. It is most noticeable on the HPM-70, most probably due to the isolating properties of these headphones (they block out surrounding noise).

Also note that this is not created byt the phone actively transmitting something. The static actually disappears when the phone goes into active mode.

The Sony Ericsson answer:

Dear Customer,

Thank you for contacting Sony Ericsson Call Center.

A certain noiselevel is normal in the phone and is due to hardware, not firmware. If you feel that it's annoying we recommend that you contact your dealer to compare your phone with another to make sure that there's nothing wrong with your Sony Ericsson M600i.

Best regards,
/Rickard
Sony Ericsson Call Center

I am very dissappointed.

I recorded the noise into a wav file.
* m600i connected to line in of a computer with standard (low-end) audio device
* volume on m600i set to be lowest possible (one step above silent)

The timing is as follows:
00s - recording starts - phone is idle
03s - press play - music and static starts
08s - press pause - music stops - static remains
15s - press stop - static stops

The problematic static is noticeable between 3 and 15 seconds.

The background noise before 3s and after 15s is acceptable and due to the low-end audio card that was used when capturing this.

then maybe we aren't talking about the same "static noise".
on the audio system i can hear a background noise if i set the volume to more than half the power. the same sound i can hear on my m600 when the music stops and starts, for about 1-2 seconds

Any way you look at it, we can conclude that the current hardwaredesign of the M600i is far from ideal for the phone to be an proper musicplayer.
SE admits it's the hardware that causes the static, although the level of static is well within their specifications?! Whatever these may be, they are not up to my/our standards, obviously
One wish for the M600i successor: better DSP or shielding please!

Btw: I still like my M600i very much! I've professionally 'played' with over 200 different phones in the last couple of years. And to me, all handsets are flawed in one way or another

I listen the wav file and I have the same problem, what do you think about? It's a firmware or hardware bug? Please send the wav file to Sony ericsson...

I guess I could send it but I doubt that it will make them change strategy. They probably already know what it sounds like and what the problem in the design is. Before sending it - I will try to record it with higher quality. Allthough the noise is there in the recording, I feel it is much more noticeable in "real-life".

SE claim that this problem is due to hardware and can not be resolved by firmware. So I guess it would require quite a large number of users complaining to make them change their mind.

so - may I suggest everyone who is annoyed by this immediately send a complaint to SE call center. Perhaps that would make them change their mind?

I don't understand why when I try to change the Mobile Network (Panel Control - Connections - Mobile Networks - New Search) the static stops... After few seconds the static starts again...

For example:
Start Media Player And Press Play - Music And Static Starts
GoTo Mobile Network - New Search - Static Stops
After Few Seconds - Static Starts Again

Uhmmm...

I've noticed this on my M600i too, although I'm fortunate not to be particularly troubled by it... I assume the Walkman-ified W950i doesn't have this problem, since I imagine people would have kicked up more of a stink if a Walkman phone sounded this way, but as I understood it the W950i and M600i are virtually identical internally... whereas the P990i and M600i have less in common hardware-wise but do share this issue... so is it really probable that this is a hardware (rather than software) issue?

I'm more inclined to think it's a problem with the media player app (as opposed to the Walkman software on the W950i) or some other firmware issue...
