I am talking about optical zoom not digital zoom. With 3x optical zoom the lens configuration actually changes just like in a digital camera. I have not seen that on a SE phone yet.

@Residentevil,
So am I talking about optical not digital but then it's not an SE phone, so i take it then the K800 3.2meg Cybershot does not have it then very strange as i assumed as the range topping Camera phone it would have as obviously it is possible.

Dogmann: digital zoom is fake zoom. it basically works by cropping out an area of the actual image mapped then stretches it over. might as well do that post-processing. as for optical zoom, im no pro photographer but i believe it works by actual lens movement, bending the light that goes into the sensor the same way multi-vista eyeglasses work
@goldenface: dunno either. might be that the Japanese have way more spending prowess than we do and their operators promise more incentive for

to invest on R&D for these phones. now i'm thinking, if it's easy enough to develop 2 models that work on differing technologies like GSM and 3G (EDGE is only an extension that sits on top of GSM) e.g., K800/K790, then it shouldnt take much R&D to re-release these japanese units for the rest of the world
