Yea, it is "REAL" Tomtom, no difference in use, GPS reciever can go on dash when driving or pocket when walking, it hooks up same as a BT headset does.

The Satellites are spread arround the sky say there are about 25-27 up there, this means maybe between 9 & 12 are in the half of the sky your reciever can see, it uses them to pinpoint your position, the more it can see the more accurate it is, so although in theory you may only need a 12 channel reciever, the reason most people go for 32 channel recievers is so you know you will get the best posible chance of it all working nicely, also a 32 channel reciever can be had for under £30 & means you then have "Overkill" which i always nice, by the way, often 4 in view is good enough.

I thought you only needed 3 satellites to traingulate your position?? Anyway I got a Sandisk 2GB pro duo at Christmas to put my TomTom onto which is more then enough for the Uk And Ireland maps I'm using, I think it's about 130MB all together. I have no problems with the memory stick.
I also got a BlueNext GPS which uses the new Nemerix chipset instead of the Sirf Star ones. It's pretty good and has a very long battery life:

The bluetooth link gets lost now and then between the phone and GPS module but it soon reconnects in about 20 seconds, not sure if it's the P990I firmware or GPS unit but it doesn't really affect it's use. As to how many channels you can get, like I said I can get up to 16 and the most satellites it's got so far is 10, it depends on clouds and weather as well as to how many you can get I think. I don't know if their's a definitive answer as to how many channels you need to be honest as all GPS units seem to work fine.

@mayacesar

Hate to tell you this but at just short of 30 Euros that is much to cheap to be a genuine copy of Tom Tom Navigator 6 on DVD.

I also have a Holox BT-321 and have been using it for quite a while now initially with a P910 and then all my phones since. Although many say the Sirf111 is the best this unit uses the Nemerix chip which has faster acquisition times and in the Holox unit it can actually acquire a fix whilst indoors. So you can plan full routes whilst still inside and is up and running before you even get in the car. The more satellites it can see means your unit is future proofed as more satellites are due to be launched.

Marc

Aslo forgot to say IMHO TomTom is the best SatNav softwrae available by a long way.

@Dogmann, I didn't know that the SirfIII didn't work indoors!!! Your right about the Nemerix models, mine gets loads of satellites happily sat on the window sill and still get's a lock in the middle of the house on the ground floor!! No doubt Sirf4 is on the way.

@apolloa, Obviously you only need 3 satellites, but lose one of them & your stuffed, u need minimum of 4 for insurance.

@pachy, no, that's not the reason.

You need 3 distances from 3 points in 2D in order to locate your place. But in 3D you need 4. A distance around one point gives you a shere. Intersect that with a sphere around a second different point and you get a circle in space. Then intersect that with a third (again, pairwise different spere) and you end up with two points. Now you need the fourth sphere in order to determine which of the two points is the correct place. I'm not sure, perhaps one could indeed go with 3 satellite locks by concluding that a lot of \"second possibilities\" cannot be true because of negative altitude etc., but I'm almost sure you can construct situations with 3 satellites in space where you really get ambigous positions and need a 4th to make sure.

In order to determine the location on a plane in 2D, you're right, 3 origins with a distance is enough.

So, does it not jolt at all, I mean a dedicated tom tom has a far quicker processor etc..? Is the quality the same.

Regarding the software, does it come with a subscription or once you buy it you have it always?

@joshiestevens

I don't actually know what processor Tom Tom Units use but i am using a Nokia N93 which has a 330mhz processor and a 3D graphics chip and I have no delays or lags on screen navigation or voice commands. Only thing I don't have is wide screen support but for Sat Nav actually prefer the flip up mode as it gives better overall view IMO. Never had any problems with a Nokia N70 or originally with a P910 although the P910 was running Tom Tom 5. Unless you wish to make use of the Traffic updates service or Tom Tom's own speed camera database their are no extra charges or running costs.

@Pachy & sbellon

Thanks for the info, didn't think of the looseing 1 of 3 satellites and your stuffed doah. But I didn't know you needed 4 for the 3D view. Still mine works fine and thanks again for the info.

Yea, the more i think about how many satellites you need, the more complex it becomes, i completely forgot about the 3d issue that really comes to light when you switch to the satellite position mapping screen, as its often the case that 2 or 3 off them overlay each other as the earth moves in which case i imagine your getting 3d but not 2d triangulation.
SO, this means that 4 may also ocaisionally not be enough ??
