M600i is my first "smart" phone with qwerty.
I am still strungling to use this kepboard setup.
T9 on a normal cellphone keyboard is the best thing that ever happened to me.
Regarding the contacts search I love the fact that I can choose the sort order. I have experienced any search problems yet, I guess I don't search a lot.
I must try it out and see.

Well I hate to say this but I am gradually coming round to this phone, with it's quirks...
Quote:
1. Contacts - This is the thing everyone uses most on a phone so this need to be slick. On my Windows Mobile you can just type a couple of keys and it simultaneously searches for numbers and names with that combo. Eg. If I type 5 6 it searches for all numbers with 56 in, and also lists alll names with "jo" or "ko" or "lo" etc ANYWHERE in the name. It's so quick, easy and intuitive. On the SE M600i firstly you press Contacts, then you type the name, then you realise the keyboard is in ALT mode, so you delete the numbers you typed, then you type the name, hoping that you have sorted contacts correctly (First name etc) then you eventually get there. Rubbish.
I have now installed DreamConnect and whilst it doesn't do everything WM does, it's an improvement.

2. The battery is terrible. I got this phone to use as a 3G push email handset. With 3G on and email being pushed (via Exchange Activesync) the battery just lasts a day if you don't do much else.
It's seems crazy turning off 3G but I can get three days with it off.
Quote:
3. There is no way of knowing if the keyboard is about to type a letter or (ALT) number. This is unforgivable.
Even though someone kindly suggested reading the manual (which apparently is the small book which come with the phone?) there isn't an icon which tells you which mode the physical keyboard is in.

4. There are no hard buttons for starting/ending calls. It's primarily a phone, so NEEDS these buttons.
Still annoying but I will get used to it.

5. Opera crashes a lot. The first thing I tried to do was buy an item off eBay. Opera crashed every time I tried.
I'm on 8.60 which I think is the latest. I will have to accept that it's not perfect.
Quote:
6. The screen quality is poor compared to my HTC C600 SmartPhone. The colours just look washed out, and blacks are mid-grey.
Not much I can do about this.
Quote:
7. My SPV C600 has a mini USB connector for charging/syncing. The M600i has some proprietary connector. Grrr...
I'm still annoyed by this.
Quote:
8. Interface is sluggish at the best of times, and that's with handwriting recognition turned off.
Still frustating, but I'm adjusting to it.
Quote:
9. There is no button to get me 'home', although this may be a problem with T-mobile locking the buttons.
I'm going to get a non T-mobile version I think! This gets around this issue.
OK - I'll take back my original comment that it's a
cr@p phone. It's not perfect, but once I get a debranded one and install DreamConnect it will be OK.
I guess the reason I'm coming round is that there is no alternative device of similar (or less) size and similar functionality.

I've had this phone for a week now, and I've just called T-Mobile (UK) as I'm sending it back. In my opinion it's completely flawed. Here's why:

I'm so disappointed as I'd been looking forward to this phone for quite a while. I really can't believe it gets so much praise on these forums. By the way I am on the latest firmware.
Any ideas on an alternative?
If your still game for a laugh try the P990i!!!

Page 16 & 17 in the User Guide PDF shows you all the icons, including these mystery ones that only I seem to see

Good luck with the TyTn; I have a Vario II, and for me it's been a living hell for which I'm looking for an alternative. Be prepared to enjoy:
- Backlight flashing on/off for no reason
- Lockups maybe 1-2x a day, depending on software
- Skype MIGHT load successfully on occasion. And you can leave it running, if you don't run any other apps in parallel, and leave the screen switched on.
- Keyboard lock-outs, hangs while using 3G/HSDPA, unresponsive when trying to answer a call
That's before you get into the lack of phone features, like auto-redial, and the fantastic one-size-fits-all maniacal buzz for any kind of alert.
I'm 'upgrading' to a fantastic, reliable, upgradable, functional... P910i.

And therein lies our loyalty to SE; we are not blind to SE faults, but whenever we are looking for a phone, it seems SE handsets are most often the closest to what it is we want in a phone.

The M600i is just on the limit of being too large, so the E61 is way too chunky for me.
With regards to the keyboard icons, I'm slowly getting there. I have now changed the 'Handwriting' option from 'None' to 'Keyboard only'. Now when I write a text in an SMS I get the icon showing me which mode I'm in (great!) along with predictive words. But when I go into contacts there is still nothing.
It's a step in the right direction though!

i didn't realise you couldn't see the imput mode icon when texting! that is out of order! i've never had that problem - but i don't see the icon when in the contacts list - never have...
edit: just confirmed that when you change the handwriting option to non then the icon telling you what txt mode your in does vanish when texting!!! is this a new bug? i cant believe nobody has complained about it before?
