I would seriously consider the Mac, as a soon-to-be switcher, I've done loads of research, and it doensn't take much to see how much better OS X is than XP or Vista. Plus, FYI the Mac can run Windows if you feel you still need it... But most programs available for Windows are usually available for OSX, and if not you can use a virtual system called Parallels to use Windows inside of OSX, sorry if thats a little complicated...
The choice is fairly simple, if you don't want to play games or use heavy graphics software such as Final Cut, Photoshop etc then a
Macbook is a cheap yet powerful solution, else if you do need the graphics power then the
Macbook Pro is your man.
Seriosuly though, get yourself down to your local Apple store and ask one of the assisstants to show you the basics, you'll be amazed.

a friend had just got a macbook and its out of this world.
now i'm set on getting the 20" imac in about a month
cant wait
