Yes it works fine with an imap account - I was using my .mac account on my K800 (+W800,K750+T610 before that) with no problems.
As it syncs to mailbox, it downloads every mail that you have not deleted fromm the server, so data costs higher than using a pop3 account that you can set to delete from server once message has been downloaded to computer. I also have used the phones as a modem to get mobile access with my laptop and this was also reliable once I sorted out initial setup. (vodaphone gave me wrong dial string at first). Pfree.

I'm using IMAP with my K610, too, without problems. To reduce data-traffic I use the "download headers only" option. When I'm interested in an email I open it and the body gets downloaded.
Newer models also support push-Email via IMAP, so you get notified immediately when you receive a new mail. This is very handy, but be aware that this may result in data fees. I have a 2GByte inclusive plan, so I don't care.
The hpone never messed up my emails on the account. Deleting mails accidentally is impossible, mails alwys stay on the server using IMAP.

The email-client is very powerful, considering that it is built-in. Im quite often sending pictures taken with the cam by email, instead by MMS, because the picture quality is much better (of course). I even do that when I don't have the USB-cable with me or no bluetooth available to transfer files, pictures and attachments.
