but if we limited the voting to SE phones, wouldn't it get boring after a bit? after all, look how many people are moaning at SE's 'lack of innovation' over the past year? I'd rather have a complete view of the market, then vote for some phone I don't have any real feelings towards.
on a note, I've edited the categories in the first post. please have a look and let me know of any comments and suggestions? I would be pleased if the moderators chip in too with your thoughts regarding this idea. thanks

If we broke it down into categories, it'd be easy just to plug everything into an excel spreadsheet and splew out the results. I do like the idea though, although I think you would have to use categories like the ones on bodums first post, otherwise like every other comparison thread it would just end up in a mass brawl with no real point nor ending.
Keep it simple > have maybe 6 or 7 categories, then two votes each for each category, add up all the numbers and stick them into some tables and graphs. (Although in the major catrgories, maybe a sub-vote might be best to reduce it to a final multiple choice, otherwise ther'll be far too many entrants). Then like bodum said each major manufacturer has a category.

. I was hoping for more support from the moderators though, since I could see a situation where some people would post randomly, double post, and so forth. then a chosen moderator could move posts or delete them.

that way it would be much easier to manage the votes, and there would be less chance of votes being input incorrectly or people double-voting.
It probably would take a reasonably long time to put together though. Maybe some time after my exams i might experiment with some options for it? Unless someone else wants to or has a better idea. I think with a seperate web page for it the stress on the forum would be massively reduced, which could be one of the things admins might be worried about?

and for a poll to succeed, we do need the help of one or two moderators, plus some senior members. anyone else think this is a good idea?

i didnt mean make it indipendant of the forum, i just thought that instead of manually having to update posts, and people having to post their votes, it would be easier to have an automated system, and would keep the forum free for discussion regarding the results
