I think the design shoudl stay as it is with the P1i. But the keyboard should be on runners on each side of the screen so that is slides down. That way is shoudl be fairly easy to design/make and there would be no need to completely redesign the housing (this would be necessary if the slide were behind the screen). Also it would allow the keyboard to be used in large or small screen config.

hum ok. maybe i will have to concede that the m600 keyboard isn't to every1s liking at first. But i will say that using it a few times is not the same as using it for a week as your main phone - after that using the m600 qwerty is as fast as any "proper"qwerty and a fraction of the size.
p.s. i like the m600 keyboard

Well, good to know that one does get used to the M600's keyboard after some time.
I've seen somewhere (not sure whether it was gsmarena's review or another) that the P1i's keys are slightly wider than the M600's, making it less prone to typos. Any confirmation on that ?
Mmm having a keypad on runners seems like a good idea, but let's remember that the more mobile parts a phone has, the more likely the creaks and other unpleasant sounds...

The keyboard could be in a automatic slider style like the W850. Just a slight puch and it flicks into place.

How about a side button that would, once pressed, make the keypad pop out from within the casing. And then, once you're done typing, you just push the keypad back into its cradle inside the phone.
Not sure any phone has ever used this design and, most of all, whether this is feasible. Maybe i'm getting a little too carried away here...
Anyway, this is how i'd see the P1i's successor.

That may be a good idea but I am thinking about the ease of use when open. When the keyboard is over the screen in my idea it would be just like using the M600 or P1. But if it came from beneath the screen it may be a little more difficult to use e.g. P910 qwerty keyboard as you are holding beneath the main body of the phone.

I'm not for a flipless p series. I'm still using my p910i and love the big gorgeous screen. Here's hoping for a 'p2i' with a flip, 5 way jog dial and brilliant features!

youa re holding beneath the body of the phone. but that works in all of HTCs devices (and pretty damn well, too). On the contrary, your not holding a "flip" - or in lamens terms, a flimsy bit of plastic on a REMOVABLE hinge, which can only be weak, especially considering the weight of the main part compared to the flip.
It just feels better when more of the keyboard is connected to the main device (like in slider form) than when your only hold on the device relies on a hinge

very interesting comments. From where exactly did you get this information?
SE must have had some very good feedback for them to use the m600 keyboard on their (lets face it) make-or-break p1i
i for one have not heard a single bad word said about the m600 keyboard and considering people on esato are always quicker to criticize than to praise i think that is pretty remarkable!
here's just one of the reviews that gave negative feedback on that type of keypad

That review's been discredited - they were using a test unit that featured an experimental variation on the keypad design with flatter keys. SE have confirmed that the final units will actually go back to the M600's design with more concave keys, making the letters much easier to pick out.
That review aside, the only criticisms I've ever seen of the M600/P1 keyboard have been from people who have never used one...
