My planned use for the P990i would be:
- Connectivity and Communication (Phone, email, SMS, web browsing)
- Organizer
- MP3 player
- Camera
This is what is attracting me to the P990i:
- Visual appeal (I like the look of the device)
- QWERTY keyboard
- 2MP Camera
- Multimedia capability
- I've been using Sony PDAs for about 5 years now
- Cheap price (relatively)
I am extremely angry on SE for stoping further support for P990 but if want to be sincere I would say like this:
- Connectivity and Communication (Phone, email, SMS, web browsing)-fantastic in those areas (with the new fw specially good are browsing and downloading via wifi).
- Organizer - serve the purpose very good
- MP3 player- the same as organizer
- Camera - the same as above
- Visual appeal (I like the look of the device) - I use it without flip
- QWERTY keyboard - indispensable
- Multimedia capability - watching dvd quality movies is fantastic
- Cheap price (relatively) - very cheap now

koto,
the thing is...p990i is not the only phone that can do that! the argument of cheap price was not a plus when it came out. today i can buy other smartphones which do the same - better or worse...so there's no actual point that speaks in favor of the p990i, unless you are just into symbian.

Agree on that. But I have P990 so speak about it. It is my all in one device (business and entartainment) and must say that it serves me extremely well, I dont need to look for something else. My next phone should have features similar to N95 but again with TS and qwerty and with size no bigger than P990. Symbian is not a must have.

i think that without any pre-info about the entire p990i history, if somebody just goes into a shop and tries the p990i, it might be a good first impression.
but if you followed the whole development, announcement, waiting, introduction, firmware updates etc. then i would NOT consider this phone. as of today, it did not reach an actual functional state that it should have as even SE promised. i am not an expert in mobile technology, but since i am interested in this "world", a lot of people i know (friends and colleagues at work etc) ask me for advice. so my answer usually now is: try it out, but don't go for it as there are better solutions!

Wow thanks for all the honest replies! Sorry I can't reply to everyone directly, because that would make this post extremely long! After reading everyone's comments, I feel more encouraged to go with this phone. I actually wouldn't mind going for the P1 or the W960i possibly, but, I doubt that their release prices are going to be affordable for me... The current cost that I've found the P990i for is the most I want to pay right now.
Oh, and I have a few more questions for P990i users. Firstly, I remember that one issue with the phone was that the headphone volume was apparently "too low." Was this fixed in the latest firmware? Or if not, how low is the volume? The difficult thing is that everyone has different thoughts about how loud or soft headphones should be...
Also, I read on uiq3.sf.net that one of the bugs introduced in the latest firmware was that the headphones only work for the phone's built-in media player? What about software like the DivX player? Does the sound only play through the external speaker?
And what was this I heard about SMS/email notification? I think I read that the phone does not notify you of new messages - is this a fixed defect? Or was it a rare defect?
goldenface,
You mention that you can get the P990i for £150? Do you know if that same price is typically available with Canadian retailers? I am planning to buy from Expansys.ca, which will be around $430 CAD after tax and shipping. This seemed pretty cheap to me already, since another store, such as TigerDirect.ca would cost me over $600 CAD after tax and shipping. Most EBay auctions I saw were also around the $400 range (after shipping).
wabre,
From what some of the comments here lead me to believe, the phone is relatively functional with today's firmware. At least, enough to suffice for day to day use. And at least, enough for what my initial intentions were... I don't know what else the phone was supposed to offer that I want to use?
The initial history of this phone isn't as much of a concern for me as how I'd be able to use it now for myself. I've been using Sony Clies for quite a while now, since before Sony killed the line. Most people in that community were pretty frustrated when Sony up and left all of a sudden - especially since they had apparently not released sufficient developer specifications for their proprietary software and hardware systems. But in the end, I still ended up buying one last Clie even after they were already dead and gone... For me, since the device was what I wanted and I knew it was able to do what I wanted well, I decided to just go for it regardless of the current state of affairs... Not sure how good this type of thinking is on a whole though, I'll admit haha..
But anyway, you mention that there are better solutions! Would you be able to give me a few suggestions that are similar in price to the P990i? Budget is one of the biggest factors to me... Also, do you have any comments about your experience with the P990i?

well, volume is low, imagine you're in the tube and won't hear your music. installation of divx is a pain due to the entire signature and signings with SE and symbian...there's only one player that can be mentioned...i even forgot the name, ah, smartmovie.

X1387 has them for 322USD + 30USD shipping which works about about 375CAD.
See what you think.

So it works but the volume is too low for only the non-built-in media player? Ie, if I listen to music with the built-in media player, I will be able to hear things, right?

Ah, thanks for that! It looks good, but I wonder if it's unbranded and unlocked? It doesn't specify. Thanks, I will look into it.

if you use in-hear phones like the hpm-70 or hbh ds970, the volume is acceptable...i use it on the gym, a noisy place, and its ok
