Yes my phone still remembers the time. That's a given, even a computer does that when it's off. The question really is do I want my phone to really be ringing when I want it off (someone do a poll). Also is the assertion that most phones on the market sound the alarm proven? I've had quite a few phones and they all stayed off regardless of the alarm (perhaps I just happend to get the phones that didn't have this feature).

Who said anything about ringing? When the phone is switched off nothing will happen except for the alarm going off if you've set it. I've had Nokias all my life and every single one of them allowed you to switch the phone off and the alarm would still work. I thought it was standard practice.

Hmmm I guess we have differing experiences. My friend is a cell phone dealer, so maybe I can get him to do a survery of the phones he's got. Then again, maybe the alarm feature isn't used that frequently by people so I don't hear about it working that way.

That argument doesn't hold up though because most other phones on the market allow the alarm to sound when switched off. I mean, your phone still remembers the time doesn't it?

Actually mine does. The recording software (mythtv) sets the bios auto-startup feature to the next recording and then shuts itself down. So it can happen. =)

Funny, unless that's a recent development, I'm pretty sure my bios doesn't have a auto-startup feature (unless it's a hidden feature). Still I've always thought it'd be cool to make my computer do that ^^

Yes. Most computers have an 'alarm' in the BIOS. You can make your machine turn on from the BIOS and by the scheduled event option in Windows.

And everyone, lets not forgot, that a phone is a phone, not an alarm clock, if your not happy with the alarm feature then, by yourself a dedicated alarm clock, that way you get no radiation, and you can turn your phone off and give it a rest.

The alarm thing isn't a dealbreaker for me, I've still kept my P1i but I was surprised that the alarm doesn't work when the phone is switched off. Yes, all these people who are saying buy an alarm clock etc but when every single Nokia phone you've had has this alarm feature you kind of get used to it....and use it. If suddenly mobile phone manufacturers stopped putting cameras on handsets would people go "never mind, I'll use my digicam instead - it's not a problem'? Of course not. Once you get used to a feature on a mobile phone and it is taken away, you miss it. All these people who are being vocal in defending the alarm function have obviously never had a phone that sounds the alarm when switched-off, they haven't got used to it. What you've never had you don't miss. I like to be able to set my alarm and then turn the phone off. It is then off for 7-8 hours and still wakes me in the morning. The battery life improves and the longevity of the phone improves. Of course I can work around this, I am doing already. It's a minor nitpick but then people DO nitpick with mobiles. There are plenty of smartphone functions that I don't use and others moan about them not being right. There is a current thread where people are bemoaning the lack of a flashlight on their P1i, after all it's not a torch is it? I have found fault with a function that I use every day so it is a valid point for debate so far as I'm concerned. Saying that a phone is a phone and not an alarm clock isn't a valid argument. So you'd be happy with a phone that had no camera, no bluetooth, no games, no applications - just purely a phone? ;- ) In my opinion, if the phone has an alarm function then it should be one that is properly thought out. Otherwise why bother? You may as well just set a calendar appointment with alarm tone because the dedicated 'wake me up' alarm function is second-rate on the P1i.

I have to agree with the complaints. I thought this was so odd that it was actually a bug and reported it in the bug forum (sorry!) This was not helped by a response from SE Tech Support who directed me to Update the phone when I asked them about this.

On my old SE K610im, the alarm always sounded with the phone switched off, and I got used to it. I had a Motorola Z8 for a few weeks before I sent it back due to the abomination of a keypad, and that also has an alarm which sounds with the phone switched off. It appears that only the combination of SE UIQ phones remove this functionality.

Given that this is so unusual, I think it's a bit harsh to criticise people so heavily for mentioning it. I'm going to have to rely on other means because otherwise I'm very happy with the phone. I loved having an alarm which only went off on weekdays so that I didn't have to worry about weekends. I'm thinking of using the K610im just as an alarm clock to compensate!

Yes, it's odd how the phone switches partly on whilst it is charging. I mean, why is there a charging mode??? Surely off is fine!
