I agree that its easy to become lazy if youre #1 as SE have been in the music phone department. its also much easier to innovate if you're #2 or #3 and want to become #1 (for reference, see more or less desperate efforts by nokia & samsung).
what I've been trying to argue is that its not *just* about the audio quality, you have to offer an attractive and complete solution to shift units. and in this regard SE have been quite successful.
will it be enough to sustain sales in the long run? probably not. but one or two Nokias/Samsungs/Motorolas with "dedicated music hardware" (lol) wont do anything to dent Walkman sales. for now...

5310/5610 and some Samsungs will become bestsellers/close to bestsellers and will DEFINITELY hit Walkman sales. We are not even talking about music smartphones, where Nokia and Samsung lead and SE isn't even close.

I dont doubt that they will sell but I doubt they'll make non-believers into believers: far too mediocre for that (overall).
music smartphones? did you just invent that word?

sassafras,
the attractive and complete solutions you were talking about is now gone i believe.

after w800, w810 and w900 hasn't put a decent AF camera in

phones. (so as to separate

from cybershot phones) so

phones now cannot boast of the same pride it had back in the w800 days.
That is the achilles' heel of

phones. And that is where nokia points their arrow at. so they put a 3.2 AF cam at 5610. not to mention the dedicated audio chip, built in 3.5mm jack, mini usb etc.

@sassafras
Sorry but you really don't know what you are talking and whilst you are entitled to your opinions which is fair enough it doesn't make what you are saying right.
Also we are talking about Music not camera's and if you seriously think Walkman phones produce a great sonic experience you really need to test some other devices. Most of which now offer a 3.5m jack something still no Walkman phone has.
As discussed many time before on the forum it is not just the Music Player but also how the Music is encoded and here smaller really isn't better not by a long way. Also the Hedaphones you use are also a key factor and any headphones that are supplied with a phone are only adequate at best.
Also you are wrong there are many devices that if you use properly encoded Music and a good set of headphones do indeed produce a great sound the N95 8GB i now have is going to replace my iPod some thing unfortunately a Walkman phone couldn't do.
The N Series has a great Music Player quality wise and also an excellent interface Album Art is very easy to add to your Albums straight from the art work in you Gallery with only a couple of clicks and attaches to every track so even your play lists all have album art for each track. After which you can just delete the art work from your Gallery so no need to fill it full of stuff you don't need.
Here are the functions you get with the Music Player
Here is what the Music Player looks like with Album Art
Before you try and claim i biased i buy what suits my needs and performs as it expect it to not by what brand it is. I tried both a W880 and the W950 Walkman flagship device quite a while ago and was wholly unimpressed by both a lack of volume and a lack of soundtage on both of those devices which is why i didn't purchase either of them.
I think you are missing he point of current discussions which is that SE and Walkmans used to be best in class but whilst all other manufacturers have continued to improve their Music performance SE has stood still and what was great a couple of years ago has now been surpassed whilst SE just churns out the same old thing dressed up as something new.
Yes SE built up a good users base but just read around the forums of now bored and dissatisfied users and they can't all be wrong can they? Last quarter SE dropped profits and with all the K850 and W910 dissatisfaction they are likely to do the same this quarter to. All these K850 being returned is costing them both in money and in image and the competition are making the most of it and stealing what were once SE customers.
You only have to look at how many N series smart phones Nokia are selling and still increasing sales of and how many SE fans on even this Forum now own a Nokia and that really is not good for SE at all.

Did I?
Anyway,I mean Samsung i450,N-series music smartphones(N76,N81,N82,N91,N95) and etc. I'm not saying they are branded as music phones on top, but their hardware, software and positioning makes them the best.

Well in fact its a 2.5mm jack in 5610, but 5310 has a 3.5mm one.

There are no such things as earphones. Technically speaking you must say In-ear headphones or if you want to be 100% correct ... Canalphones :]
Well you're wrong too. *no offense*
There is no such term "In-ear headphones", that type of sound reproduction devices are called "IEM"s - In-Ear Monitors. A.k.a. "plugs", but thats informally of course.
About the sound quality - well ease of use IS important but after all its common for many of the phones out there(not just music), so whats the point to choose a music phone compared to non-music phone equally easy to use but cheaper? Without sound quality(of the bundled headphones too) and power there is no point to call a phone music phone.Do you call camera phones the phones that have easy to use camera? No. If so,you should call iPhone the ultimate camera phone.
Only phones with good imaging hardware are called camera phones. Why so many people don't agree its should be the same with music phones too?

*No Offence* but u quote me when I say "or if you want to be 100% correct ... Canalphones" wich is the right term to use, not IMEs. So what is your point? You were wrong, learn to accept it.

Yes,Canalphones IS 100% correct,you are right.But the
terms are In-Ear Monitors(IEMs), earphones or earplugs(rarely). Look at every manufacturer's site and you'll see. Not that you're wrong, but they don't use "canalphones". I've seen "canalphones" mainly in forums and etc.
But anyway, why are we arguing for such little things? All of the mentioned names are for real.
Cheers!
