As for the reasons for such behaviour, for me it was a corrupt jpeg i set as a background image. of course the jpeg was only corrupt in my phones eyes. everything else displayed it properly.

as for fixing the mess, at the end i had to resort to using update service. if i remember the steps correctly it went something like this:
1. turn phone off
2. start update service on the pc
3. wade through update service until it wants to see the phone (i.e. the press "c" screeny)
4. get the sim out, put the battery back an plug in the phone
5. turn the phone on and hold the internet key on the right.

at that point update service recognized the phone and told me i already had the most current firmware. it asked whether i wanted to update anyway, which i did.

voila, fresh phone. of course, everything on it not on the memory-stick was gone.
