Well, I do like my phone, but I never thought I'd be kissing it!
The front is definately metal, and the back plastic

The best way (apart from scratching your phone on purpose

) is to leave it on the table for few minutes, and than touch the phone with your lips. It sounds akward, but aluminium should be much colder then the plastic parts, as it dispate the heat quicker. If you can not feel the difference in temps, then it is probably painted plastic...

But surely you'd be able to tell the difference between the materials by their specularity?
And would the plastic be lighter or heavier? Because mine is deffinitely metal.

I'm pretty sure mine is aluminium (08w7 build).

Well...I am not so sure that I could spot the difference based on specularity alone...don't se why they couldn't mimic that in the paint ( I surely can mimic almost every kind of material in my 3D software (max + vray) ) ... anyway, they could just apply aluminium coat on the plastic.
My T610/T630 hybrid was polished 3 times (Alu. parts), and every timd it came out perfect looking...that wouldn't be possible if it was just a paint
Could somebody here with a a P1i Navigator "kiss" the phone and report

Would really appreciate it, as i am thinking of trading my P990 and some cash for the one mentioned
@DagMX I am not so sure about the weight difference though. My guess is that Al would be little heavier
