Both Walkman and Cybershot brands have become a disgrace thanks to SE's complacency. I see a significant increase in SE users based on their past reputation. That's good because they'll hurt so much more when they fall from their zenith.

Well it seems most of you are wrong somewhere or the other...

As stated above by the dude, W960 is by no means a bad phone or a bad music phone, it's just priced much higher than it should have been... It's pretty good and one of the best in music phones, that's the reason it's being compared... The two best music phones launced last year, the SE W960 and Nokia N81... Please undersatand what I have said...

Before going further, I would like to thank Fanofmodi for making the right topic heading "(Mobile review) Comparative review : W960 vs N81" as many people on this forum would have loved to name the topic, "Nokia N81 beats SE's W960 in music in Mobile Review's comparison review, again"... Ha Ha Ha ... Just don't take it personally...

Mobile Review have tried their level best not to be baised to any of the two comapanies/phones as it is quite clear after reading the comparison...

But as far as the quality and a fair comparison is concerned, I think Mobile Review were not fair enough... Some of their comments:

"As far as music playing phones go, I deem headphones (rather than a remote control) a more essential factor – not many will go ahead and buy them separately, for the most part people prefer to just plug what comes boxed with the phone in and play, or that’s the way I see it."

On the other hand:

"Before we start, I should note that had we utilized Nokia’s default earphones for this test, it would’ve ended up losing in every single round. Therefore, much like with the radio test, I decided to use the headphones torn away from the HPM-70 headset, yet without the N81’s bundled remote control."

What do you all have to say about the bold line in the above para... The N81 will sound better with different headphones and W960 will sound better with SE's bluetooth headphones, but they compared N81 and W960 with the headphones that came with W960... There are lots of contradicting points in the review which shows that the comparison was not fair enough, I am not mentioning all of them though...

Conclusion: With the best headphones the N81 may sound better than W960 but that is only by a small margin... The main reason being volume, which is SE's fault for keeping the volume low and could have been louder if they had put in a better sound driver... According to reviews, W960 sounds better with SE's Bluetooth headphones than HPM 70, whereas it should have been opposite...

As for loudspeaker volume, Mobile Review says N81 is louder and clearer... I can't say about clearity at full volume but from GSM Arena's N81 and W960 Review, W960 seems louder in music player (Music player volume is what I assume was compared at Mobile Review too)...

Sony Ericsson W960:
Music - 72.3
Ringing - 73.5

N81:
Music - 67.8
Ringing - 75.7

So exactlly which one is louder??? I do not know but from my personally experience of both the sites, I feel GSM Arena is somewhat more trust worthy...

@hgautam
nice points, there are some opposing things in the article but the comparing N81 and W960 with the same headphones sounds to me fair enough although not everybody switch headphones.

btw
The music can be louder by putting Voice Equalizer, better loudness than MegaBass..

I have question:
How HPM-90 comapred to HPM-70 and bluetooth one? stil the bluetooth sounds better like you say?

@darknoob

I agree, with same headphones N81 may sound better but it's only by a small margin, that doesn't make W960 sound bad as many here are thinking... That's all I wanna say...

It's not me who is saying about which headphones being better, it's sites like GSM Arena and Mobile Review which have stated that W960 sounds better with bluetooth headphones than HPM 70...

Just because SE claims a certain feature is there, it doesn't mean that feature works properly. Take for example the RDS feature in P990, they have eventually even removed it from their web site. I'm sure it's things like this that lost points for SE.
Unfortunately, with their current technical capability SE just can't hope to tackle Nokia.
As I mentioned in another post, a few years later Nokia will probably be so far ahead that they wouldn't even bother to look behind and worry what SE is doing. Just Google for "Morph Nokia Cambridge" and see what I mean.
