Well they are... The theoretical barrier of M2 capacity is currently 32GB. After that it's believed that it will require a new filesystem formatting to continue increasing their storage capacity... But not 100% sure... Anyway it may work without new filesystem, no one knows... We will know that for sure when the 32 GB cards are invented... But we are not too far in my opinion. As the 16GB cards are coming now, the 32GB ones should come in one year
The barrier is due to the physical memory architecture not the file system. The fat32 file system can read and write memory well over 32GB (2TB infact).
However Windows cannot format partitions over 32GB in fat32 (it uses NTFS instead). MAC and Linux can.
Since phones currently use fat32, a memory card over 32GB would need to be formatted by the phone (or MAC/Linux) since Windows will only be able to format in NTFS (which the phone can't read).
Hopefully MS will release a patch for Windows to format fat32 partitions up to 2TB. It's unlikely imho that phones will adopt NTFS since it's such a proprietary file system. However one advantage of NTFS is that folders can be controlled by permissions, something that is not possible with fat32.

So is 4GB the largest Sony M2 card capacity atm?
No it's 8GB. 16 will be out soon.
I have 8GB in my W910 and K800. Works perfectly.

I want one now! I'm hoping it won't have any problem with any of the current generation of SE phones (W890 for me)

It depends how much memory you want and how much you need actually. If you think 8GB is enough, you can go for it, but if not wait for 16GB cards... Using the phone for videos and movies may give you the need to buy 16GB card, but for music and picture shots 8GB is enough imo.
