sorry, I wasn't being specific, I was being general about what people have to do to get something halfway towards what they would really want
anyway, surely people do HPI checks for a fiver just to be sure the seller doesn't have debt on the car if nothing else? who wants their shiny new car reposessed because of someone else defaulting?

some do look lame
but you can jhave a nice one which means something to you. like mine i think, its my name Max B, (b second name begins with this) and so M4 AXB is closest I can get unless I want to pay high £XX,XXX
Some friends of mine have stupid ones to try and get it to look something like there name and in the end it looks nothing like it.

Its just the uk system, its how it started off and how it has stayed.
On the subject of private plates, i can't find anything thats remotely like my name, the nearest is; B42RYS but for £3500 you can shove it Mr. DVLA!
What i really want is B4RRY, but some lucky lottery winner with a porsche has it! Damm that man!

thats part of my point though. anything half decent is only for the rich which should not be how government agencies run their business... at worst it should be a raffle/lottery (of esato fame

) at a reasonable cost, not who can spend the most!
for example, on ebay australia, some
Victorian number plates which are very good and less than £200!

That's so weird how the UK does it. In New Zealand our number plates are 6 characters long. So long as its available, you can have anything you want, and they only will restrict it if you want swear words.
New Zealand number plates don't correspond to the age of the car, so there's no need to worry about that. We have a card in the front window of every registered car telling us the age of the vehicle.
Each personalised plate costs a maximum of NZ$750 for a premium plate (any letters or numbers in any combination), or $500 for one with three letters, then 3 numbers in the same style as our regular plates.
We can have coloured plates, plates with pictures on them, etc.
Once we get sick of our plate or want to get rid of it, we can make a bit of money and sell them on TradeMe (New Zealand equivalent of Ebay). I've seen some go for very high prices too.

FYI peeps, the specialist ones (ie over £1k) are only available through independant sites or DVLA auctions, not through their standard website.
And you'd be surprised how few people do HPI checks, they often think "oh they know what they're talking about, I believe them". Again, people are pretty dumb...
