> Why the fuss about UIQ?

Ares, you're a baby who doesnt know his toy is lost and it aint comin back. If you're so not dumb as me, explain each and everything i ask, that is ofcourse if you actually know about UIQ as you claim. This is a copy paste from what i posted before
"Compared to S60 3rd edition? Well for starters, the one thing that puts it into a joke of a 'smart' phone is the phone's inability to move different applications from one folder to another. If I want the picture editor to be in the root menu, i cant do that because the phone's way too smart to do that.
Secondly, no profiles. That's just sad.
With themes, ringtones and messaging tones change. I'm sorry but i just cant keep on changing the ringtone to my custom one again and again when i change the theme, something which i do very often. Theme and ringtone have nothing in common.
Really really pathetic search feature in music player. Only searches the file by its first word, and not through out the file name. Makes the search totally pointless IMO.
Volume output shockingly low. Wont and will not unlock and do such stuff to my phone. Want a music phone to work like one right out the box.
Inability to find out from which number you receive the SMS from if the said contact has multiple phone numbers saved.
Incoming SMS times off by a maximum of 24hours. Not so in my i450 S60
Those are all just the top of my head, will post more once I remember more. "
If i'm technical expert, you're plankgatan: dead set on what he believes and gets offensive the moment somebody doesnt agree with him or when he doesnt have an answer.

I think no need to make this discussion a fight.
@QVGA: All your points above are valid, in the sense those are indeed significant usability faults that disturb the user experience. What you seriously confuse, however, is UIQ and SonyEricsson's implementation of UIQ. When you evaluate your end-user experience on a Symbian phone, you should realize that what you alltogether see comes from the combination of three layers:
- Base layer: Symbian. Includes all base functions used by the other layers.
- Medium layer: the UI variant (S60 or UIQ). Mainly includes appearance and interaction.
- Top layer: phone manufacturer's tweaks and additions. Extends and can replace components from the other two layers.
Let's pick up some items from your fault list above:
- Inability to move applications to folders. This is customized by the manufacturer.
- Low volume. Again belongs to the top layer.
- Pathetic search feature in music player. Neither Symbian, nor the medium layer includes media applications, like music and video players. Those are written and added by the manufacturer.
- No profiles. Ditto. The Z8 and Z10 are UIQ phones from a different manufacturer (Motorola), who added a profile manager.
Let me add some more major faults:
- Low RAM (the fault responsible for the P990 fiasco). The manufacturer (SE) decided to include a 64 MB chip. Which is insufficient for SE's implementation of the platform. Another implementation by Motorola (seen on Z8 and Z10) has even less, only 48 MB RAM for running applications. However, on those phones there is no notorious low memory problem. Why? Because Motorola had less intention (or resources) than SE to alter the medium and base layers, so they screwed up less.
- Call list. Symbian has an API for managing the system-wide list of phone calls, so it is possible to write third-party programs that access the call list for adding extra functionality. You see such programs on Nokia phones, but not on SE phones. This has nothing to do with the medium layer: both S60 and UIQ support the call list API. What happened is that SE disabled the Symbian API for call list management, wrote an alternative one which is used on their phones by their own built-in programs, but did not document its use for developers.
So, UIQ is not responsible for those usability problems. In contrast, UIQ is responsible for the speed and convenience when you want to mark and delete the 9th, 36th and 54th items in your Email list.
Now make up your conclusion.

I agree UIQ might not be to blame, but in all honesty, the only UIQ phone there is is SE ones, so thats the only way to judge it?

It depends on you how you judge things, like a girlie in bad clothes or naked

No, what you're asking me to do is to judge a naked girl as if she had clothes on

Yeah, making judgments is not easy...
There is a related tale of two kids. One kid (son of Eric) had a true gem, but ditched it, because he saw for a too long time how more popular the other kid (Nick Kia) is with all his colorful pebbles.
The story does not end there. We are all the other little guys who determine what is popular in the kindergarten. We can decide that pebbles don't even need colors in the future as it is difficult for our eyes. And we can also open our eyes wide and decide that finally we want the gem!

Very true. Motorola screwed it up differently. They wanted cheap popularity by giving up the touch screen. Which, on the other hand, proves how customizable the UI layer offered by UIQ is.
Apparently the above tale can be further customized as well. There are more kids going for popularity. Matthew Rola also made his conclusions from seeing Nick Kia's success. Both he and Eric's unlucky son have already lost the gem. The question is who will find it next time. One thing is sure, however: none of the kids will search for the gem if there is no demand for it in the kindergarten. In that case the realm of pebbles keeps on flourishing.

Yes.
shud i still buy w960?
That entirely depends on your needs and... taste.
will there be applications made for uiq in the future?
Yes, for sure, as far as CPS is concerned, and I mean more powerful apps than ever.
