I think Ericssons next steps will be to stop making phones with Sony and simply continue with what they are already doing elsewhere.
they certainly won't be making mobile phones.

this would be the obvious decision, yes
but there are still a lot of people in sweden that want ericsson to build phones
things get a little complex here, but its also in the interest of the european union to have a strong independent smartphone brand. they already tried to set up an independent search engine, but the company was bought by microsoft.
so there are some interesting times a head

yeah but isn't XPERIA a series brand? like with vaio laptops they have the C, E, F series etc. I suppose that they are going to focus only on the smartphone segment, but still would seem a little strange. 'Check out the new Sony XPERIA smartphones'
Hmmm maybe I could warm to the idea, I would like it if they make ericsson the sub brand name and thus changing nothing
Yes unlikely, but they that name does have a good following of fans so why remove it!
So? VAIO is a brand. So are Walkman, Cybershot, Alpha, Bravia, and Playstation. The brands happen to also act as the marketing name for various division within Sony (although Sony's imaging division gets two brands). It makes sense to just keep/adopt the XPERIA name as the marketing name/brand for the mobile division.

Agreed. Xperia seems like a logical brand name for the new division, considering that it has gained some consumer recognition over the years and the fact that they've stated that they won't be producing any more feature phones.
Soo their next phone might be the (Sony) XPERIA Duo/Nozomi/Konichiwa/Whatever.

If they changed Xperia name it's just going to confuse people again
The average consumer anyway.

I still honestly believe that most people thought Sony Ericsson was already Sony, I know I've said this before but it's so true.
Actually a thought just occurred to me, did Sony spend 1bn on patents alone? Because surely the cheaper option would be for both partners to step back and leave the JV that way, when they bought Ericsson out what else did they get?
