The message alert is the second most important feature on the phone, the first being the ringtone.
Everything else is just nerdy features, bluetooth, fancy calendar options ,IR connectivity, animated screensavers are a side show to the single biggest reason for a mobile phone.
COMMUNICATING WITH PEOPLE!!!!
I lost count of the amount of important texts I missed, because of that silly tone, the suggestion that you should keep looking is so ridiculous, you should think what your saying
Why not save on your doorbell, just keep looking to see if someone is there
My mates stopped texting me cos I never heard them, every fookin time I picked it up there would be 5 texts on it I had missed, I started to hate the frekin thing.

T68i s indeed a good fone but nowadays, a lot models supercede it, but its good 2 have a phone which started it all-a winner of its own!

man why didn't you just get one of those stupid flashy pens that tell you when you re gonna receive a tone or a call??? lol i mean if your hearing is messed up, let's hope that your vision is alright...

ok some ppl are going a little far here, but a fair point is made.
I have a T68m, upgraded to a T68i. a T300 and a P800.
The Ericsson T68m had a nice LOUD alert that could be heard (i swear even the ring tones were louder on that baby). It also pulsed the vibra about three times for the messages. The only disadvantage is Delivery reports, it played the same the same beep for the delivery report, which sometimes gives a bit of a confusion. (my older Blokia 6210 gave a more discrete beep for delivery reports).
T68i made it more quiet, and also cut the vibra from three vibra pulses to two somewhat shorter pulses, meaning more missed messages.
T300, same as T68i tone wise, BUT felt louder (i rarely miss a message on that)
on all the above phones no alert for new emails (if u have it checking periodically)
Bricksson P800, excellent, work of art, not only are the tones fully user selectable, it has the old ericsson tone, and the Vibra pulses three times before the tone is played which for some reason makes it less likely to miss a message. Also new email alert. Different alerts for mail, sms, mms, and area broadcasts.
Great work on the P800, trash on T68i/T300
win some loose some.

Yea, SE did a fantastic job on the P800 (BTW on the P800 my network voicemail tone isnt included in the options to change its tone, but i eventually found that file & changed it to my own chosen WAV using "file manager"),
Anyway, people who cant tollerate anyone finding the odd fault with the t68/i, please read note no.1 below, those of you who are more outgoing can read note number 2;
Note 1, T68i was a LANDMARK in phone history, SMS tone was PERFECT.
Note 2, T68i was a LANDMARK in phone history, SMS tone was PERFECT for people with no friends.
