They are not a big deal because instead of Live you get SonyEricsson in the original phone. It's the same for me. Only the red button is a pain in the ass.
So:
for a lot less money you get uglier icons and a red button where a menu should be, but all the original functions.
that's a good deal for me. Like I said I appreciate the phone for its quality, not because I can show it to my friends...

I really do not understand why you keep on saying that a Live unit is SO much cheaper than a regular one. Without contract in Greece they both retail around 389E including VAT. With contract, ie subsidized, one get even get them even for free from all the networks.
I have to admit that with some effort one can get used to the ill-conceived Voda icons, but there is no way to comprehend the utmost stupidity behind the right softkey LIVE shortcut, leading you to the vomitting 2.36E logos and ringtones that you can get for free from a trillion sites and friends!!!!!

You guys are right, I must be colourblind, the default icons are clearly more colourful, maybe I like the vodafone icons because red is my favorite colour. Im now changing my mind.....I think vodafone should offer a free service for ppl that want to revert back to the default menus (this includes GX10 and myx6 etc).

I say they're cheaper because without a contract I bought mine on Vodafone in Portugal for 329 euros. And sim free, 400euros internet price, because in any store here it's more about 480euros...

I think we're all being slightly unfair to our friend Vodafone. Ok so they've customised it, and in my mind they haven't done all that bad. Its all about branding. So they've taken away some of the minor features, and changed the menu icons to match that of their own. What people have failed to mention so far is what they've added. Messenger is one of these, and if you haven't used it, don't knock it. Its a great way of keeping in touch with people either online or the phone. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe any other network offers this. I'm prepared to put up with the branding for this alone. They're trying to give you added features, not take them away from us.
(just for the record, in no way am I affiliated with Vodafone, nor wish to be!)

I don't think anyone thinks that the menu icon change was a good idea - it certainly wasn't necessary. They could have added things like Vodafone messenger into the existing menu structure anyway (which is what they did anyway IIRC).
I didn't use Vodafone messenger I must admit - is it a WAP based thing or what? Presumably it's only useful if you know plenty of other people using it too. I've never been a fan of IM apps on phones anyway as I find them invariably fiddly to use most of the time and if I want to have a conversation with someone that requires an exchange of more than about two messages then I'll simply call them - it is a phone afterall!

I see you're using MSN. Well imagine being able to use MSN on your phone, to keep in touch with people wherever you are, being able to send pictures aswell as text.
Its good because its non-obtrusive unlike a phone call - at times its not convenient to call someone if you're after a short response. Its got the same convenience as a text message, but you're not restricted to texting to mobiles, and from a PC it doesn't cost anything either. - or WAP on the phone, which is simple to use, not fiddly at all.
It does also offer connectivity to AOL and MSN, so you can message all your existing contacts, but I can't get the damn thing to work, so forget that one!
I think all Vodafone are trying to do is integrate some of the features that a modern phone such as the T610 can provide. In my eyes, theres nothing wrong with that. Its nowhere near complete, but it seems to be getting better, slowly.
I admit, Vodafone Live is lacking in content and theres no reason why they had to replace the more button with it, but hey, theres no need to get up tight about it. If it doesn't suit your needs, don't buy it.
Yes diversity is a good thing, but so is a certain degree of uniformity. You can't blame em for trying.

I am still waiting to get my voda T610 restored to an original SE outlook, but meanwhile an interesting (to me) "discovery" was that the "unnamed" side button on my T610 may open any given wap page.
The other day I changed my home page setting in the WAP profile (which of course was set to Vodafone as default) and now this button leads to my personal wap page. Even more - it is cached, and thus is a great way to have colorful bookmarks page
That's about all. I think Vodafone could have done much better with the icons even using Black&White&2Grey colors.. I don't know why they made them look even worse compared to an old T65/R600 (which icons are lovely)...

in my opinion - vodafone are a brand name and like any well known brand they would like their name all over the product. everyone is different or else they wouldnt have made so many phones, and making even more as we speak - some people like vodafone menu's and some people prefer a less cluttered menu system
i work at a phone shop and im not surprised vodafone have seperated or included more shortcuts on the main menu, there are some people out there who havent a clue how to work phones and this would be good for them(im not saying anyone here is like that - just some of the customers ive had)
if you want the original deal then the best bet is to buy direct from a dealer or when going into a shop buy a sim free phone - that way the product hasnt been tampered with or branded.
remember - its all about the BRAND!!!!!

Well I did say in my previous post that all the mobile based instant messaging products I've used (on phones and pocket pcs) have been far too fiddly for me. I don't mind using SMS for the odd message here and there since, as you say, it can be less intrusive than a call - but I find using a small phone keypad to be quite uncomfortable for extended periods of typing and I personally don't find that messenger apps lend themselves very well to mobile phones because of the relatively large amounts of typing required on the small keypad and as soon as you have more than one conversation open things get very complicated!
Of course this is just my own experience - I don't text anywhere near as much as some of my friends do; a lot of the time they get drawn into multiple message conversations and perhaps an IM would make more sense for them. Personally I use SMS for short sharp messages that hopefully don't require multiple responses. For extended exchanges I will make a call as it it will usually be far quicker and cheaper and probably overall less intrusive than being engrossed in a phone using SMS for 5-10 minutes.
