i work in a phone company and lets be honest peeps - we're only here to sell you the phone and nothing else.

im on orange myself and after trying all the networks and customer services i believe that they are the best, they offer the best upgrade deals without you having to change your number and deal with things alot quicker.

lets be honest - if you want software upgrade or fixing of software you are best of going to a SE centre or someone who knows what they are doing. i know customer services are there to help you with wotever problem you have but lets be honest - they dont know WAP from a simple phone call.

Agreed, call center can be extremely high-handed.
The business customer reps even more so.
The initial voice mail system when you call them is the most annoying system i've ever used - i frequently end up at a recorded message that i didn't want after going through n levels of menu.

@jonbob.com

2nd most recognisable brand in the world? Are you pulling my leg? So Orange are more well known than any two of: Coca Cola, Pepsi, Mc Donalds, Man United, New York Yankees, Sony, Nokia, Vodafone etc etc?

I'm still laughing...

@ edskin

I'm quite serious, though I can't remember which study it was.

Well let's have a positive statment for Orange. I'm with Orange, and have been with them for over a year now. I find thier network covers (almost) everything.

They have been great with me when i needed my phone replaced (my old Nokia 5510, wonky software that even the replacment didn't fix *goodbye*) but I doubt they'll give me any help on this phone (I bought it out of the US, it's got the AT&T logo on it an all) but oh well, that's why this forum is here! Right?

I have been able to travel with my Orange phone without problems (I had perfect service in Italy and Holand) though it is a bit pricy...

As for Tarrifs, here they are the competitve ones at least or they are setting the prices, the others tend to scramble to keep up (though FSR did manage to catch them sleeping by offering by the second billing to other cell operators at the same rate to FSR clients)

All in all I'm happy, and wouldn't change, unless someone offered some exceptionally lower prices.

I'm on orange myself and trust me they are nowhere as bad as useless singlepoint.
left orange originally cos I was lured by a free t68 which I upgraded with t68i software on singlepoint and when vodafone lauched mms services last october on vodafone live was told by useless singlepoint that they were only activating mms on new connections and existing customers would have to wait till january.
Got into many arguments over this with singlepoint and needless to say cancelled my contract as soon as I could.
Rejoined orange day my singlepoint contract finished.
I know orange have there bad points (what network dosn't) but orange have never been as bad as the year of hell I put up with on Singlepoint

The reason they cut you off wasn't because you were "abusing" the free sms service as such - it was because you hadn't made any chargeable calls in 6 months. It is in the smallprint of every PAYG service in the UK that if you don't make any chargeable calls at all for x months then they have the right to deactivate/suspend your account (although the period during which chargeable calls must be made varies a little).

As for the logos they have been their since Orange started and were basically a means of increasing visibility of their (then new) network. As jonbob has pointed out, it has certainly made the orange brand very well known. I agree that these days it isn't so important for them and so is arguably not required but most of the time it isn't that difficult to remove the logo and many phones have exchangeable covers anyway.

q: why do we (Orange) mod software / lock handsets?
a: to try and protect our cash investment in the phones
a: to (in theory) add functionality to the handsets
(even tho' the P800 doesnt support line2)

q: why dont we (O) reflash software?
a) up until the opening of the walk in repair centre in our Oxford street branch, we physically didnt have the ability.
as has already been said, we supply the network. we have very little to do with handsets.

Q: why does Orange CS know so little about the p800?
a: long answer here: the fax and data teams (those that respond to you when you dial 156) get about 30-40 minutes training on the p800. there is ONE works handset here in the Plymouth callcentre (where we take about 60% of the 156 calls) adn that only turned up A WEEK AGO, when we launched the p800 in, when, march?
the only reason that i have one is because i bought mine sim free from SE (woooo!) adn sim swapped.
there are resons why few staff have p800s - our internal subs prices are reduced by a whopping 20% from our high street prices (oh wow your sarcasm is heard from here), we are hit by the same upgrade fees that our custs are, in fact they are usually higher (upgrade fees are reduced if your monthly spend is high enough, and since our Liberate Tariff is good, bills are low....) and the p800 has been out of stock for staff since the phone was launched until about 2 weeks ago.

in our callcentre of about 1200 staff there are, what, 4 p800's - mine, the works one and two others.
now YOU, the readers of this thread, knwo how long it can take to get used to the phone.. can you imagine how difficult it becomes to know how to answer even mildly complex queries when you have had maybe 20 mins exposure to the handset?

especially when a lot of calls are concerning things that we really dont support - things like the synch software, mp3 encoding, all the things that make the p800 sooooo nice.

the folks at 156 are there to try to help you connect your phone to WAP and the internet, to set up your POP3 and MMS messages.. so please spare a thought for the CSR when you are frustrated..

(and BTW, calling a callcentre from a p800 on the speakerphone is a BAD IDEA.. our headsets are turned down quite low, if you want to call us use the handsfree that copmes with the phone..)
