@PhonePersonality, Well i bought mine in the UK as a grey import from Malasia 10 months ago (its about the normal period i keep a phone for)
i paid plenty for it, but i loved it, however, the casings & "Feel" of the phone was always in question.
its that flip design which spoilt the phone for the "man in the street" it really was SH*T to use that flip, even after carefull callibration of the screen the flip buttons work in a cheap & nasty way, bearing this in mind, SE must have realised that an electronic flip was needed & could NOT be added to the p8, so the P8 had to go fast.
They maybe did originally have a longer run in mind but to give an electronic flip & make the screen 65,000 is impossible, the only other option would be to give everyone a new P900, that would break the company financialy i'm sure.
Problem is they did promise to continually improve it (which they did do) but they never said how long for, & they can't be expected to keep the phone as their flagship phone when it has things about it that put people off buying it in the shop when they pick it up.

Ipaqs are superceded on almost a 3 monthly basis & most users DONT have the latest version,

if people feel they have been mislead when they bought the p800, they have every right to make that known to SE, my view is that i love SE phones & i know that they MUST renew the models faster than in the past in order to stay afloat.
so as soon as i new the P900 was a week away i sold my P800 to insure a good return on it.
I do wish you all the best with your petition, but as i said, i have cut my loss's & moved on.

Oh, I totally agree with you.
I sold mine also for the very same reason.
However, I can't help but empathize with those who feel they've been led astray.
The half-life of our little toys gets shorter and shorter everyday, but its a heck of a lot to pay for a gadget that won't even be manufeactured any longer...All within 52 weeks of hitting the markets.

hopefully/prolly gonna release another hi-end phone within
a year, should we start a petition for everyone that buys P900 now?
It's a bit unfare to start a petition just for ppl who think phones
should progress slower heck what about all ppl who buy new cars this year it's alot more costy and next year the manufacturer comes out
with a new improved model! Now thats really unfare!!

(Yeah I wrote this with a good portion of irony/humor so calm down)

Well......

I say I have to agree with pachy.

Apart from that, i find it terribly surprising that ppl that bought expensive mobile phones (and don't even use it to it's full capacity) think they are some sort of 'special breed' that they can go and moan and complain when an upgraded product is released.

Funny, new car models, washing machines or even computers don't cause such a stir.

If you paid a lot of money for your P800 you proly had a reason to do so. But if you didn't think at that time that , being a business that needs to amke profits, was already developping it's successor, just as they are new developping phones to succeed all our current phones, you were not thinking.

Also, I fail to see why a comsumer of 1 product, is entitled to anything special because another product is released by the same manufacturer......

Come on ppl, move on with your life. If you bought the P800 cause you needed it and it's got what you wanted, than it is impossible that it no longer lives up to those needs simply because there is another phone on the market. i dare say ppl that really use the phone for its capacities, probably don't need to 'upgrade' to begin with.

Then again, if you bought it just to look cool, you better have a lot of money set aside for maintaining your image, coz there will be more and more phones, each a tad more expensive than the last, released at shorter and shorter intervals.

DEAL WITH IT!

Me, i might even get a P800 at low low low cost now... so please ppl all go out and buy a P900, make sure the damned thing gets to bottom pricing fast

Oh please... given that reasoning... Intel should be giving out free Pentium 4s to everyone who ever bought a Pentium Chip to begin with! "What? A faster P4? I demand a free upgrade!"... Gimme a break. It's been a full year! I expected an upgrade to the P800 6 months ago!!! Keep up people.

If you can't afford the phone... don't buy it. No one forced you to buy the P800. I love my P800. I have no major complaints... the 'bugs' people mention about UIQ 2.0 vs the new 2.1 are the following:

-lack of OTA SW upgrade (this was promised on the P800)
-lack of customizability (this was expected, but not promised since the UI of the P800 is BLUE even if you get the Mineral Gray version)
-no video recorder (BS was given "It's illegal to include a video recorder, thus we didn't allow access to the video stream of the camera") ... this was obviously BS since the P900 and almost every other phone manufacturer has a video recorder built-in. Communicorder is something they SHOULD offer to all existing P800 users.

Everything else is forgiveable. I wouldn't mind spending $20-$30 for an upgrade path to UIQ 2.1 If it addresses (and I know it does) all the concerns above.

The P800 is an excellent phone. The only reason I'm getting the P900 is cuz it's newer...and has the hardwired keypad that I wanted. I have no gripes about it being released a year after the P800. I'm pleasantly surprised that it's out before expected! (I was informed last February that it would be announced in Dec, and available in Jan of 2004) So I'm happily selling my P800 to upgrade to the P900. Even if the only major improvements are all in the SW. (Better screen, and it's NOT blue... that's about it)

The P800 has served me well for the past 10 months. I'm very happy with it's capabilities, and actually haven't 'out-grown' it yet. Yes, I can say "I wish it had a faster CPU, bigger memory, WiFi...blah blah blah" but seriously... if you regularly use the things the P800 DOESN'T have... why did you get it in the first place?

keep the new units rolling in... the faster... the better! And I have to admit, I like thier new designs a lot more than the original line-up... they still may not look as good as the original Ericsson stuff... but they're getting their.

All I have to say is, "Thank God they're phasing out the baby blue crap!"

As I said several times before... My P800 with 3rd party apps installed in it can match the capabilities of the new P900 (according to my needs of course).

From a technical perspective I think that it would be pretty difficult to replicate the UIQ 2.1 theme feature on the P800 as it only has a 4k display. Most of the themes use a lot of colours so using it on the P800 would mean that you could only use bland simple themes.

And from the business perspective it just doesn't seem like this petition was a very well thought out initiative. As it has been said, SE is a business and their survival depends on increased revenue, and let's face it, the P800 has some problems that can only be addressed with a hardware upgrade.

I'm getting a P900 within the next hour or so (the FedEx truck is out for delivery!!) and I think it's pretty much worth it. The bad colours on the P800 has always irritated me, it's going to be nice to get more realistic colour reproduction but the most important feature for me is probably the improved flip and phone-mode.

If you want the features of the P900 then get one. As for the camcorder, couldn't agree more that it should be released for the P800 too. But that's a software-thing that the P800 can easily support, the rest is not.

Iceduck... why would UIQ 2.1 be so difficult to add to the P800? Just cuz of the color limitations? I highly doubt it. The P800 may only have 4000++ colors... but that SHOULDN'T affect the way an OS runs.

All we wanted was to change the crappy baby blue UI that the P800 comes with... to ANY OTHER COLOR... we have 4095 more colors to choose from... don't tell me that THAT is a difficult task.

The big thing that bugged me was that UIQ 2.0 HAS that capability and removed it... just like they removed the video recorder API from the P800 camera. It's not like we were even asking them to make a video recorder...we wished they did... all we asked was for the API... they didn't give it... all they gave was a stripped down version of the full UIQ 2.0 camera API.

THAT is my main gripe with the P800 SW. Hardware-wise... my only complaint was addressed with the P900... actually... ALL my complaints, and everything on my wishlist for the P800 was added with the P900 (all except for the miracle-wish SD slot instead of MSD - I wonder why they didn't include that??? HAHAHA )
I actually emailed my wishlist to a friend of mine in ... I feel like they actually read my email!!! hahahaha!

I'm not saying that it's impossible to change the blue colour of the P800 UI but I'm saying that it's impossible to replicate the colourful themes found on the P900. Using those themes on a P800 would probaly look horrible.
