I am sorry to ruin your conspiracy teory...but many things today works this way.....the hardware platform (in this case the phone hardware: the electronic itself) is exactly the same on several models...but the only difference is the software....and even this might be the same anyway, the only thing that keeps each model "seperated" is that some of the software function are enabled on some phones were as they are not on other phones...the same goes for the hardware (which can be enabled by a software code as well...)
This kind of developing and making "different models" is THE way to make consumer electronics today and this goes for both phones, TV's, medical equipment (I work with this kind of electronics myself), Audio electronics etc etc......so I am sorry to say...but you have to get used to it and live with it....
