@batesie
I have tried the trial version of the Mini GPS on my P800 some 6 months back and it just gives the Cell Id and I don't find it very useful.(unless they changed it recently) Thats not what we are talking about. In my opinion as switch bitch and Mixin said above if we can get the area info i.e the name of the place as well that is something really useful

its because you have to assign the place name or data with that particular cell id yourself. if the operators gave us a list of cell id's with there exact locations, that would be perfect... This message was posted from a P900

@batesie
I agree. I think this area info might be working on the same principle and technology as the Mini GPS or rather the other way around.

@ anish or anyone else!

Do you know if you can get the information through Orange in a similar way you can get it from O2? I've tried Channel 200 as you described above, but nothing happens? Could Orange possibly use a different channel?

Does anyone know if it's possible in anyway, or is it just a case that Orange don't support it, and thats it?

The cell id in the uk is numerical. The cell id in Australasia is alphanumeric, identifying your location as a meaningful place name rather than a cell id number. You do not need to assign these names yourself. However, miniGPS still gives a numerical cell id. What we need is a database accessable via gprs which could be integrated with miniGPS so we can get a meaningful readout of what area/base station we are connected to, rather than a list of arbitrary numbers....
Are you listening, Psiloc?

@randomyachtie

I did a search on the channel for Orange but I was unsuccessful. What I found is that for area info its usually 50 or 200 but this is for voda or 02 so might not work on orange but worth a try.

@devoiddroid

Do you know whether 02 charges for Cell Broadcast
