I don't think it's really a good idea putting a HDD in the same product that’s emits that amount of radiation really.

As some one else said. Solid state memory is the way to go. Their are rumours of SSM cards with up to 36GB.
I don't really think that mobiles should have too much memory really.
It would be useful for transferring data from home to office for example I suppose.

It all depends on the future of mobiles.

Will all phones change into Super phones?

Well, it all depends on how far into the future you wanna look.

I don't mind large storage. Specially with a phone with multimedia capabilities. mp3, photo & video storage is never really enough.

BUT that shouldn't take precedence over the communication and PORTABILITY aspect of a MOBILE communicator.

Batteries technology can only do so much for you, that why there is tryouts with fuel cells, so they might be able to be used in the future in cell phones. That could compensate for HDD's power need.

It is true that when there is disk access the drive is less shock-resistant. But there is hardly any disk-access because of buffering and the ringtones you pick would be stored in some temporary work ram. So would the phonebook and it would only be with accessed further if you edit.

It is like Windows. The waves used for notifications and stuff is in the heap along with the phonebook and other temp data used for instant access. Just like a regulary computer. And if you add IBM's new technology against shock (and dropping of HDD's) the problem is virtually solved.

Besides the size is not that big a problem. The drives does not use extra chips (the controller is built in like they are now in microdrives) or extra power circuits. Sure i would not look good on the P910 but a larger K700 with 4 gb is acceptable.


And don't forget : Toshiba believes in it - and they are not the smallest company in the world - unlike their HDD.

well, there was this technology that I haven't heard anything from for years. It was 'holographic' storage.

Basically it was a 3D optical storge.

It was pretty star-trekkie/superman technology... the storage device was a glass/crystal cube. A cubic inch could hold something like 1 terrabyte or something.

I saw it featured on Beyond 2000 about 5 years ago... never heard anything from that end again.

But it is a promising technology since it was already in the testing stage. It works just like a DVD does, but there are 2 lasers that burn the data in. And since you have a 'cube' to work with, data can be stored in different 'layers' throughout the cube.

ya... so theoretically, a clear 'crystal' the size of our Duos now could hold about 100GB of data... problem with this technology is that lasers are power hungry as well... specially if you need to write and rewrite data.

So for now, improvements in solid state memory is our best hope... small, reliable, no moving parts & easy to manufacture... now if only they decided to make them cheaper. Manufacturers should be able to sell them at US$100/GB of solid state memory... regardless of type... SD, MMC, MS, Duo, Duo Pro... etc...

Specially for Sony, this will be the ONLY way to insure maximum penetration into the entire electronic market. They have to make them cheaper. And they have to be the first ones to do it, way before SD and MMC cards drop prices.
