Even the Falkland isles are part of England.. even though they're on the southern tip of Argentina (who tried to take it off us, and got thoroughly whoop-assed !

Should answer everything, The "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" aka "United Kingdom" (also officially accepted terminology) is a COUNTRY. England is a constituent NATION of the United Kingdom. Great Britain is the name given to the island that consists of the England, Wales and Scotland.
Dependent areas of the United Kingdom around the world include Anguilla, Bermuda, British Indian Ocean Territory, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Guernsey, Jersey, Isle of Man, Montserrat, Pitcairn Islands, Saint Helena, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, Turks and Caicos Islands.
Therefore, England is part of Great Britain, which is part of the United Kingdom. The U.K. includes England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland are not countries but the United Kingdom is. The remaining portion of the island of Ireland (that which is not the U.K.'s Northern Ireland) is an independent country called the Republic of Ireland (Eire).

Alright everyone thanks for the help.
I believe the reason for the seperate sporting teams is because of the seperate sporting associations.
For instance FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) is as its name says a groupo of Football Associations not a group of football playing countries. I'm not 100% cercent but doesn't Monaco participate in the French Football association and so not get it's own place in the world cup.
One of the arguments against letting Celtic and Rangers play in the English leagues was that then we might have to merge FA's therefore losing votes on FIFA.

Celtic and Rangers don't play in the English League as they're not English teams! (Although Berwick, a town in England, have their team in the Scottish League)

They are not English teams because they are not affiliated to the English FA.
Have to say it was fun having this discussion at work, I live in Northern Ireland, so as you can imagine there were some people who had very strong views one whether Northern Ireland was a country or an occupied zone.

There would never be a United Kingdom team or a Great Britiain team because Scottish football fans and players and English football fans and players are deep rivals and don't want to play together.
Also the other home nations don't tend to be big fans of English football.

Im not from Northern Ireland originally, i lived in Manchester till last year. Most of the time where I live there is no problems. The worse we've had is a couple of hoaxes. Still it is strange when you can't go to the newsagents because the centre of town is blockaded whilst they search for bombs.
Most of the time beatings are blamed on the "problem" but in reality it is more likely to be over control of Drug selling in that area.
Oh and people over here do follow English football.

Whether NI is occupied or not does not change its status. Technically its a province, not a country. It's further complicated by the fact that most people in Ireland (Northern and Republic of) see the whole of Ireland as one country.
