The big deal about blackberry is, if your employer is using a blackberry server to push e-mail over GPRS, only a phone or handheld with a blackberry client will be able to receive your email! Alternatives like smartner are not an option because my employer is not going to deploy a separate GPRS solution just because I tell them some guys on esato thought it would work real good. My tech dept. uses blackberry, so so must I.

So, per the warnings in the other thread, are p910s outside of the U.S. currently shipping with the blackberry client? Anyone (yeah right) know specifically whether p910s in Belgium have the client installed? Will a p910 also interact with Blackberry's desktop redirect software?

Sounds like some people have this working and some don't; sorry for all the questions, and TIA.

Brian.

@Grimslade

I don't work for Smartner or anything, but it may help to point out that your employer does not need to adopt any solution at all for you to use Smartner to retrieve your corporate email on a P9xx. There is a Professional version for use by individuals exactly like yourself, who want a BlackBerry alternative but don't want to get involved in IT setup or changing their employer's entire configuration. It consists of a PC client that pushes your email from your Outlook inbox, and a phone client that sits on your P9xx. It costs £3.50/month (or the Belgian equivalent - 5 euros-ish) and requires nothing more complicated than the ability to leave your PC switched on when you are not in the office (as the emails are pushed from the individual machine and not the Exchange Server), and a GPRS subscription.

I use it and it works like a charm - give it a go, nothing to lose!

Hi
I have been watching this thread for a while. Having recently purchased a P910i to get rid of my T610 and PPC am a little dissapointed about a recent phonecall with CPW regarding push email. Although this info is not for corp email it is I feel an interesting point.

I phoned CPW to get them to activate my push email for my personal POP3 email (ntlworld). The first person said no problem, he took my account details and then said a setup sms would be arriving shortly at my phone. At the sametime he offered to set up GPRS and MMS. The GPRS and MMS setup came through but no push email.

I phoned today and get a different person who puts me on hold for 3 minutes to speak to his supervisor.
I then get told that CPW are not supporting the ability to do push email anymore as there is a fault with the phone at the manufacturers end. They have had a very hit and miss experience to date. He also mentioned that he is not sure what will happen but SE might recall the handsets due to the fault/bug. I ended the phone call, as I loose patience with call centre staff when things are not positive.
I do not believe the recall side of the story but thought I would mention it. I am not too bothered as it only slightly detracts from what I think is a pretty cool *non* MS OS smartphone. I have set up the phone to pick up my POP3 email automatically at the 3 defined points in the day.

Good luck with the corp email side of things.
One note with the push facility does it provide true blackberry functionality. ie if someone sends you an meeting request or assigns you a task in Outlook do you get that on the P910i as you would on a blackberry. Of is it just purely email?

Regards
Ro

As an employee of CPW, I'm sorry to hear of the problems you've been having and the misinformation you appear to have received. I think the problem is that there is a lot of different versions of the truth being bandied around, and few people seem to know the facts. As I understand it, the UK (and, in fact, all non-US) versions of the P910i are not shipping with the necessary BlackBerry client pre-loaded on to the handset, as no UK network currently supports the feature. I believe that they are intending to offer this support in the next couple of months, by which time a software download should be available from RIM/:se: to enable the promised BlackBerry push functionality.

However, as I have said a couple of times already, if you are skeptical about the release time (as I am) or just don't wish to wait for push functionality, why not use the Smartner Duality (I'm starting to sound like a salesman for a different company!) product, which is cheap and will allow you to push POP3 email to your P910i?

Hope this is of some use (and a bit more informative than what you have received from CPW thus far!)

Thanks for the reply. Very informative and very much appreciated, I agree normally CPW are very good and informative. Even to the point when I bought the phone (i believe 4 days after its UK release) the CPW chap fully admitted it was the first time he had seen the handset let alone been trained on it. But he used his knowledge of the P900 to answer some basic questions of mine. I will check out the solution you mentioned and try and persuade someone at work to leave on their PC.
Thanks again

I have just installed a trial version of smartner duality from the SE website and it works fantastically straight away!

Add this to your monthly subscription, along with a 5mb GPRS bundle, and it works out cheaper than O2 Blackberry Internet mail for the same thing! excellent!

By the way, the O2 Blackberry Connect program is due out in November...

Anybody knows where in the US to get the P910i with pre-loaded Blackberry software ? T-Mobile (the operator my company uses for our our Blackberry services) does not seem to know anything about it. I have been carrying a p800 and an a Blackberry for more than a year now, and getting rid of the blackberry would be my main reason to buy the p910i...

Hi
A little bit off topic, but does any one have DUN (dial up networking) setup and working for him/her on P910. I have a service provider and plenty of extra minutes and was trying to set this up on my new P910 but unsuccessfully. When ever I try to use it it comes up with the error that 'Call was not answered'
Any suggestions ??

Thanks

@JBE

There's a good reason why T-MO USA wouldn't know anything about it. It's because the P910i is not supported in N. America. And chances are you will not find any P910i anywhere with Blackerry support preloaded. My advice to you is to wait for the release of the P910a.

@dave_uk,
Thank you for clarifying that, re: Smartner. It may work great for some. But even if I were willing to pay out of my pocket to have my corporate e-mail pushed via a desktop redirect, I doubt my employer would be thrilled about me freelancing as a tech that way. Data security is pretty important to the bosses; I wouldn't be surprised if something like smartner was deemed a fireable offense around here!

Still, thanks for the explanation. Blackberries still appear to be vaporware around these parts...
