I think the first thing I did was to memorize the layout of the keyboard.. Very similar to feeling your way around the keypad by using the bump on the # 5 keypad.. I encreased the brightness to try to get the screen to reflect some light onto the keyboard.. It kinda helps, but not really. I have a moto a630 that also doesn't have a lighted keyboard, but at least the keyboard is at a right angle from the screen. There were probably some mechanical reasons why SE didn't illuminate the keyboard as well. But then again, they may had come to the conclusion that it wasn't absolutely necessary and that the consumer could just get by..

QWERTY has no backlight? that is just plain stupid!! Is it totally unusable in the dark?

although not having a lit qwerty keyboard is a little unexpected its not totally unusable. as I said earlier in the thread it just takes a little getting used to but I happily type on it now in light or dark situations without even looking at the keyboard. I also don't look at the regular pc keyboard when typing (after 30 years or so of keyboard bashing

)

Have you mastered the 1 finger technique?
Being that the keyboard is so tiny I can use my left index finger to stretch across the entire keyboard and type the alpha keys then I use my left thumb to hit the enter/nxt key. My speed is impecable. Not to be practiced by most as you may develop carpal tunnel syndrome from this

I think I've almost achieved the Zen level of typing at this point.. Thanks SE..
