The display is designed to withstand a lot of pain from keys, etc. But no, it canīt withstand anything. You might still want to be careful, since I've seen one or two S700's with (small, mind you) scratches on them.
If you are intending to be very careful or if you know yourself to be the complete opposite to careful, then a protective surface is as good a tip as any. Even though most users will prolly never need it. Truly.

But, for a quick answer: The K500i is a cheap budget phone. As such, it uses plain plastic for the screen instead of glass like the S700.
