@plevyadophy

I can't speak with 100% certainty about the T-Mobile variant, but I do know that service centres do not use the Update Service, like us consumers, but they have a connection to an server (I think it's called Emma or something??) from where they can download FW updates for all variants. It also does not restrict them to only being able to flash phones with FW approved by their network. For example, I am about to get my Orange P910i unlocked and flashed with generic firmware by a local phone shop because they can do it, and unlike CPW they're not bothered about it not being approved by Orange. I should, apparently, then be able to use SEUS to upgrade my phone whenever there are generic FW versions released.

The Update Service recognises the CDA version in the phone as being network-specific firmware and will therefore not allow you to upgrade an Orange/T-Mobile branded P910i via your DSS-25.

Hope that is of some use!

Dave

Dave, doesn't the SE update service have an IMEI lookup as well? This could potentially thwart you from using it even with generic f/w.

@hippo

That's what I understood to be the case with all my previous P series h/sets, but apparently I was wrong (as was the large school of Esato thought supporting this theory). I have since read a post that contradicts this quite convincingly, in that as long as the handset is unlocked as well as having been flashed with generic FW, it can be updated on SEUS. Apparently the guy had done it, and it was someone respectable, not one of the new-breed of Esato gibberish-speakers(!), so I did believe it.

I guess the acid test will be to see if it works once I get mine unlocked and flashed. If I'm wrong, I guess it will mean trips to the Service Centre everytime I want a new FW release!

Jeez, people!

There USED to be a hack that allowed you to upgrade P900 Orange firmware to generic... that hack has now been circumvented by SE, and there is NO way to upgrade a P900/P910 with Orange firmware to generic firmware using the online upgrade service.

It IS possible if you know someone with SE Fighter or another (expensive) hardware solution. It does not work with DIV and its variants. I'm sure there are a few people on here who offer generic firmware upgrades using Fighter, perhaps they'd be kind enough to make themselves known... and stop this tired argument!

@elyl you're not following the thread, mate. Go back and read Dave's post a few up from here.

If there's one thing I can't stand more than people who don't it's people that jump the gun and don't read threads properly before posting

I did read the first thread, and I suspect the Orange technician was talking through their ass, cos if they've decided to allow firmware upgrade via upgrade service for the P910, then it's a major change in policy, and I might just eat my hat.... and anyway, my post was directed more at the more recent posts, and not the original.

Hi Dave, would you care to recommend the shop that can do the flash (I'm in NW London)?

Cheers

Mate, you're still not reading properly. I entirely agree with you, which is exactly what I was saying to @fanosc earlier in this thread. However, the point that I am making is that you unbrand, generic flash and unlock via a Service Centre whichis what I am intending to do. What I am still not sure about is whether, once this is done, it is still possible to use the SEUS to update the newly-unbranded phone with future generic FW releases.

@brainwasher

The place I am using is TIPS in Mill Hill Broadway, NW7. Apparently, it's not available yet, but should be in the not too distant future. I have no reason to disbelieve them as I have used them many ties before (as they are not an authorised Service entre, they will do flashes that CPW will not [e.g. Orange FW to generic FW]) and they have promised to call me when they can do it. They charge about £15 for the unlock and are yet to give me a price for the flash, but I would think about £30-£35 in total. I keep having to phone DQ to get the number, as for some reason I have neglected to store it anywhere, but I think it's 020 8906 1515.

Good luck,

Dave
