It's the WAP settings that are locked down. For example if you wanted to use an O2 sim card for the "free" GPRS through a WAP proxy server then you can't do that on the Voda branded phones.
I'm getting a P910 tomorrow on Voda from a local Telecoms company. Totally unlocked and generic firmware. £80 dearer than Voda but a shitload less hassle in the longer term.

I didnt buy it from Vodafone but it was sim locked and software locked to Vodafone.
I didnt mean to enrage you dave_uk [

], but I still dont see how charging £30 for any work of this kind is justified. £15 maybe yes, but £30?
I dont mind terribly much that I have to pay in the end. I'm more annoyed at the service I have been getting from CPW staff. That is compounded by the fact that some people seem to get it done for free and others dont, and at varying charges. Its all a bit inconsistent.

The way I see it is if you buy your phone directly from Vodapain then hard luck, you have to pay to have it unlocked/unbranded because it was probably a cheaper upgrade anyway and you are contracted to the stupid company for 12 or 18 months depending upon the tariff. If like me you buy the phone from someone else knowing it to be branded/locked, because it was a bargain price on ebay or similar, then you must also expect to pay to have it unbranded etc, and if you end up getting it done for free then BONUS. I saved over £200 by buying a Vodapain P910i and paying for it to be unbranded/unlocked, than if I had bought a SE generic sim free one, so I am very happy. My mate got his unbranded at the CPW for free because I did the asking and appeared very ignorant about it all despite the contrary, sometimes it works and sometimes it does not, but for a phone that costs hundreds of pounds, even £30 is a smallish price to pay for total freedom if it is needed. Remember ignorance should be shown at the CPW counter, not for real. The best of luck with the unbranding chaps.

It looks like CPW are getting wise to this now.
I asked them to "pricematch" on the Voda £30 p/m contract to £200 for the handset, but they said that because they sell unmodified ones and not branded they are more expensive and don't qualify for price matching.
The guy also told me that CPW have been told NOT to put generic software on branded phones as they will (and have already) get in big trouble. Apparently someone returned a handset to Vodafone with generic software put on by CPW and they went mad !!.
I called 4 different CPW service centres across the UK and they all refused to reflash it. Looks like anyone who has had it done already is lucky, but it's coming to an end. I also heard that if generic firmware is put on a Voda IMEI then you can't use the online updates in the future - any truth in this?

Cor blimey - I didn't half have a bit of a rant earlier, did I?!
My apologies - I was (flamed and) inflamed over an argument about Arafat!
Anyways, I pretty much agree with Rockabilly, though I will still be trying it on the grounds that I work for CPW and hence should be able to get them to agree to it.
But, I would say that if you think the £30 is too much, why not go somewhere that will do it for less. The dodgy independent shops on the High Street will surely be less concerned about whether it is sanctioned by the network or not.

I just went to CPW listergate nottingham branch, and they flash my p910i with no question asked. I just showed them the proof that the phone is really mine!

I have done some checking with various companies, they all say the same thing, if you have your phone unbranded with generic software, then try to ugrade the firmware online at the SE website, it will not rebrand it, it will upgrade the firmware as generic, apparantly the IMEI number is irrelevent when it comes to upgrade, however the phone being unlocked to any network is important. Interesting I hope they are right, time will tell. I would also like to show my support for CPW even though I don't work there, I am very impressed by the staff, unlike Phones4U, who are mongs and irritated me the one and only time I went into a store with their complete lack of knowledge (oh do we sell phones then ?).
