Dirkies is right. I would never buy a p800/900/910 if I actually wanted to use the camera for anything other than a good bit of fun. And to be honest, I've had a good bit of fun with it. It's not designed to be a digital camera, but a PDA/Phone that does more than any one person could possibly want (with extra software).

However, I would have to agree with LAU, I thought the sensor was onyl about 320*240 or whatever, and interpolated to 640*480. As long as the camera is held still it's fine, if not as great a quality pic as a 640*480 sensor would be.

Just let it slide. I honestly don't care that much about it. If I really wanted to find out, or care, I'd email SE's department and ask for an informed decision as to what resoloution the sensor in the p800/900/910 phones operates at.

Some proof!!

OK, I've done some quick tests with a sheet of paper laser printed with some patterns I drew in a paint program.
This is the same kind of process used with digital cameras to compare image quality.

The pattern most at left is such that if the camera had 640 pixels resolution if would capture vertical patterns. A 320 resolution camera would only capture a gray bur.

The second pattern is such that a 320 camera should pick it up. The lines and spaces between the lines are twice the thickness of the first pattern.

The third pattern is 3x thicker than the first, and is there only to balance the other two.

The same test was made for vertical resolution, but this time adapted to 480/240 pixels vertical.

All the photos were taken with the camera standing on top of table with delay timer, so that the camera did not move a pixel!

I stress out that these tests are not final, but IMHO are good enough and prove my point --> The SE P9x00 camera can not see much beyond 320x240 pixels.

I will not waste more time on this.
Have fun!

Edit:
Images posted at Esato are shrinked in size so the quality is not very good, but they are still good enough to see the patterns.

well, to me that looks like proof that it is 640 pixels wide, you would have to have the camera spot on perfect to get see the lines, yet the pixels at 320 seem to be extremely clear, suggesting that the resolution is over 320. Besides it still doesnt alter the fact that 2 320x240 photos dont make 1 640x480, you would need 4 photos to do that :\

This means the SE P9x0 has one of the WORST phone cameras in the marktet => ONLY 0.08 MegaPixels !!

OH MY DEAR GOD NO!!!!!!!

(Runs through the streets, panic, terror, GODZILLA! GODZILLA!)

Whatever will we do now, we're expecting to begin shooting Terminator 4 but the P900 camera won't record to film or do those imax shots we were wanitng, maybe a samsung will?!?!?!?!
( ... )

Eesh, if you want a camera, buy a camera, its a phone, it has a camera designed for working with MMS not a camera designed to challenge Nikon.

Or even cannon lol.

i have always known pXXX interpolates the images to 640/480 i just always take pictures in 320 / 240 and then blow them up to 640 / 480 you get better looking images than just taking pics on the 640 / 480 setting.

I think the main reason SE say its a VGA cam is because the quality difference between 320 / 240 and 640 / 480 is not as big a differance as say 640 / 480 and 1024 / 768. So basically they can get away with it. You shouldnt take the cam issue seriously the pxxx phone has a cam merely to make it functional not to take great pictures of art.

Hey guys, I'm not saying the camera should be good.
I'm only saying the camera is not 0.3 MB as advertised.
Besides, I *do* have a Nikon digital camera.

@Aled
Did you ever notice the 3 second (or so) delay after you shoot a 640x480 picture?
What the firmware is doing in that time is interpolating the pixels between the two images.

One example. "A", "B" and "i" represent pixels.

Step 1 : Take picture A:
A A A A
A A A A
A A A A

Step 2 : Take picture B:
B B B B
B B B B
B B B B

Step 3: Interlace:
A A A A
B B B B
A A A A
B B B B
A A A A
B B B B

Step 4: Interpolate:
A i A i A i A i
i B i B i B i B
A i A i A i A i
i B i B i B i B
A i A i A i A i
i B i B i B i B

Where "i" is a pixel with a color between the A (above) and B (to the right).

And yes, maybe the resolution is not exactly 320x240, may it's 320x256 (PAL), but it's far below 640x480.

just like photo suite app which takes 4 pictures and makes a claimed 1.3mp resoultion image. You can change how long the p9XX pauses the picture on screen for in the settings.

@bletch
Have you tried removing the pause in a 640x480 picture?
I tell you: A 3 second pause is always there.
You can not remove it.
