Someone on my-symbian forum emailed Gmail and this is the answer he got:
"Thank you for your email. Currently, Gmail does not support POP access to
Sony/Ericsson phones. As we continue with our beta test release of Gmail,
we look forward to providing additional features and enhancements to our
service.

Sincerely,

The Gmail Team"

He emailed them again, asking them to explain why is that and we're all waiting for the answer.

Hmm... no wonder I can't connect to GMail at all... Wonder when will they start supporting it?

I don't understand this.

Surely POP3 access is POP3 access full stop. How can they "not support POP3 access from SonyEricsson phones"?

Anyone with sufficient technical knowledge to answer this??

I'm still playing with that problem.

I can connect quite happily from my iPAQ through the phone using GPRS and access gmail no problem, and indeed on my iPAQ I didn't set up the SSL/TSL stuff or special port numbers, I just setup the incoming and outgoing server names, but so far everything I have tried on my K700 just doesn't work

I know what the problem is!

Having spent a while investigating this, and also involved our CPW data team, I now know why we can't get Gmail POP3 to work (and why it does work for masseur on his Ipaq!)

POP3 access appears to be dependant upon your email client supporting SSL (Secure Socket Layer. A protocol used for secure Internet communications). The only mobiles/PDAs to support this are those running a Microsoft OS. Generally, mobiles use MIME (Short for Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions, MIME allows you to send and receive graphics, audio, and video files via the Internet. All the SBC Yahoo! Internet e-mail clients support MIME) instead, which is insufficient for Gmail's POP3 server at the moment.

Therefore, only those of us with SPVs, XDAs & Ipaqs etc will be able to access Gmail via POP3 on a mobile device.

This is the best explanation I can come up with - say speak to Gmail. Gmail's response to my email was auto-generated and they said my question was answered in their Help Center

So, there we go, presumably they will adapt their server, so that we can access it in the not-too-distant future, since the reason for introducing POP3 must have been the desire to increase number of users.

Don't give up hope....

I'm just a little confused by that as my K700 has TLS/SSL encryption settings amongst the email account settings, unless that is something different.

on top of that, on my iPAQ I have not ticked the "Outgoing e-mail server requires authentication" nor have I ticked "Require SSL connection" and yet it works. basically on the iPAQ I have defined my gmail account exactly as I have for my other pop3 accounts, i.e. just incoming and outgiong server names

@masseur

Hmmm....strange. Well, it is only a guess but I would assume that the K700i must refer to it's encryption as TLS/SSL, even though it is not. It's also odd that it should have superior encryption capabilities to the P910i, for example.

Re: the Ipaq not requiring you to select the security - I really don't know. I guess it just picks it up automatically. On the SPV C500 that we tested, those boxes did not need ticking either and it still worked, so I guess if the connection requires SSL and the handset has the capability, it will allow connection, irrespective of it being selected.

Not a very comprehensive answer I know, but having isolated the problem this far, I think it must be the encryption that is the issue.

Incidentally, just spoke to who informed me that the K700i does not support SSL, but the P910i does - shows what they know!

edit: @chundongchau

The built-in client. You have any ideas?

@ dave_uk

Don't have other suggestions, just wondering whether there are any new ways...
