In Australia the SE Service Centres will master reset everyphone before and after each upgrade.
I got the reason too.
Before - If the phone memory is full, it can slow down the transfer, and when they are busy, they have better thigns to do then wait around
After - When a new firmware is installed on the phone, it maybe slow, and it may not install correctly without a reset. They compared it to a PC installing windows. Its needs to reset.

Personally, the reasons that they gave is flawed.
They are upgrading the firmware which resides in the ROM. Firmware upgrades shouldn't be affected by all the data that was placed there by the owner. Unless the phone keeps giving them a 'phone memory full' warning then they should start erasing things that are kept in the memory, not perform a master reset immediately.
What do they mean when they say, 'they are busy and have better things to do than just sit and wait'? They could always fix another phone while your phone is going thru the upgrade process. They don't have to stare at your phone while it is upgrading itself. Plus it's their job to fix phones!!!
Firmware flashing should install correctly even if you have all that data in your phone. A currupted file(s) during the upgrade is not the fault of the memory being used.
If this is true, then the

on-line update service should give us a warning about this and instruct everybody that they should perform a master reset before continuing. Why don't they? Simple, because it is a load of c**p.
A master reset should only be performed with the consent of the phone owner.

Over here in Australia, the big Service Centre in Brisbane only had 2 computers devoted to Flashing.
Now bare in mind, I dunno about the rest of the world, but whenever a phone is taken into be fixed, the software is also upgraded, or re-installed.
Nokia does it here
SE does it here
LG does it here

Oh yes, that is the 'Standard Operating Procedure' at any service center anywhere around the world (unless the manufacturer requires you to buy the upgrade like Microsoft). Firmware upgrades are done on all phones that are received for repair service. But all service technicians, be it for PC, PDA or phones know that a device doesn't need an upgrade if it already has the 'current version'. Checking the version of Software/Firmware on any device is fairly easy, a few seconds at the most.
I still say the logic of performing a 'Master Reset' on all phones received for repair' is flawed. I wouldn't do it if I don't have to.
I'll only do it as a last resort. Some people have very important data on their phone that they consider priceless. I would not want them going after me because it is SOP to do a 'Master Reset' on 'all' phones received for repair.

Had the phone flashed to R8... Didn't lose my settings and data because they hadn't done a Master Reset. Only thing is my initial problem still persists and I'm looking @ getting a new phone.

Vodacom. I called their customer care centre this evening and they said everything was kosher on their network. Problem seems to be with my phone. Hopefully by the end of this week I should have another phone.

i see this quite alot at work, usually its a corrupt message blocking the rest from coming through,a hlr refresh usuallly solves it.
try asking them to do that.there may not be a problem with the network, just just your account.they dont need to see your phone, they should be able to do it in a few mins straight from their pcs

If it is a problem with the account, a new phone won't solve it. Why don't you try your SIM on a entirely different phone. If the problem still persists, then you should have your account fixed or (worst case senario) changed.
