scotsboyuk is right the coverage is a big piont. I know on the east coast were I am I have great coverage. NJ,PA,CONN,NY and west coast CA. Just make sure you do get a multi band phone cause it makes a big diffrence in reception. Case in piont my t68i as oppose to my P910a. Traveling Down a magor highway here I get poor reception with t68i and great with the 910a. Also I am sure you probley have not thought about this but make sure you get a unbranded phone. This is my first one and I like it a lot more then branded ones i use to have. Also if you decide not to go to cingular you could take the same phone and go to T-mobile. Verizon does not use the Sim chips or sprint so you could not take it thier. Stick with sony and the sim chips a side benifit is you only have to type your address book in once! I hated haveing to renter it every time i got a new phone.

Strange thing is it does show colours & images etc. !!??

Coverage is something most Europeans take for granted, but there is no point in buying a great mobile phone only to find that you can can't use it. A little research beforehand goes a long way.

Shadow, I looked over the Cingular map & spoke to a few friends that recommeded Cingular over Verizon for the area I need most coverage...namely the Southeastern Region of the US. The Cingular Map shows this area fairly saturated. What do you mean by "branded" phones? Is this similar to "unlocked" phones?
scotsboyuk, thanks for the info. Yeah, you should have seen the look on some people's faces when I would mention that I did not own a cellphone! It was like telling them I didn't own a toothbrush or something! There were various personal reasons I won't go into, but that's all going to change in the very near future. The S710a looks to be a winner for sure. How durable are these phones? Build quality, etc.?
Well, I'm off to the Cingular Store & Office Depot to look at some phones up close & personal. I'll report back later, and I greatly appreciated everyone's imput.

@cajieboy...yes they are the same sort of speak. Branded means they came from your service provider, your case cingular, and unlocked means that it can work with any provider. A unlocked phone could be a cingular phone that was flashed or like mine bought from the manufac. To me I like the undranded phone for the looks (no cingular logo plastered all over the phone and screen) and it seems from reading the posts from people in erupe that use O2 you can't seem to get thier logo off the screen. To me paying all that money for a phone and I can't change it to the way I like it, aka themes (love my Mac os X theme) and haveing thier name all over it annoys me.Also it seems branded phones seem to have certain features disabled on them also.....can't rember the thread but it had to do with O2 and the K7xx something.

O2 actually use the least branding of any network in the UK. As the Japanese networks play ane ver bigger role in the global market branding might actually increase, it is actually quite popular in japan from what I hear.

The S700 is rather resilient, although it does seem to scratch easily. The screen is first water though, it's scratchproof, mine is still scratch free after a few months and others have said the same. A good quality case should protect your new mobile from the elements and you could always buy a new housing for it if the one it comes with does become damaged.
