Nope, nothing like a floppy or cd causing the problem!
Little update, just tried booting the system with the hdd unplugged, and the pc still powered itself down randomly. The power indicator light on the back of the PSU went out, and I have to do the same 'press and hold the power button to reset then press the power button' routine a few times before it will boot up again.
I have a feeling that the whole system is about knackered, not just the hdd!

Well, finally managed to get the pc to run long enough to run the recovery centre, got the booting problem fixed, pc booted into Win2000 fine...... than promptly died 5 minutes later!
the hard disk appears to be working fine now, but the computer keeps turning off, as if you've just yanked the power cable out.
Any techies out there have any ideas why? Is the PSU/motherboard shot? I don't think it's a virus or anything like that, it still turns off regardless of if you're in windows or not, or even if you have a hard disk plugged in or not!

Ok, next step would be to check power supply i think..
Have you tried another wall socket? Yes, go ahead and laugh, but it has happened to me once, it nearly made me a Valium addict before i pulled the lamp plug out of the (twin) socket shared with computer and i noticed a blue spark lighting up the socket from inside. I moved to another socket and everything was back to normal..
If that fails, try another power supply unit. If you have a friendly computer store like i have, buy a new unit, unpack carefully and save all plastic baggies and twistlocks in case it isn´t the power supply either. I do believe it is a problem with the power though as even the smallest nano-second powerloss is an eternity for the CPU, and can cause it to consider the HDD dead among other things..

Thanks @threex - are psus easy to change? I'm a bit wary of changing these in case I mess something up and blow something up!

I'll try different socket though, see if that makes any difference.

I´d put it one notch above building a LEGO house..
four screws (usually) and just make sure all powercables are attached to motherboard,HDD, floppy etc. they are all one-way, non reversible so you´d have to be a right klutz to mess it up. Bring the old one to store in case you are not sure about Watt rating or if it´s AT or ATX (most likely unless you stole computer from British museum)
The HDD powerplug can be a tedious bastard to pull out, mind you!
Good luck!

Currently using an old P266 laptop my girlfrend gave me on long term loan after she bought a new one (lucky git

), which is great except for one thing - it will hang or reboot itself for seemingly no reason. It'll do this 2-4 times a day. It's running Windows 98, and won't go into suspend mode, it says something like 'can't find suspend mode on disk, please run hdprep32' or something like that, could these be linked? It did this hanging/rebooting thing with her, but it is doing it more frequently with me, perhaps because I'm doing more with it, like surfing the net, which she didn't use this machine for? Help please, before I lose my temper with the machine!
Little update on the main PC, have taken the old PSU out and just waiting on a PSU from my girlfriend's uncle who works in IT, should be able to get me one for nothing, but it probably won't fit in my case as it's a Hewlett Packard system whose case won't take a standard size PSU (replacement from HP will cost £80!

) - will probably just make the damn thing fit and be done with it or buy a new system.
