Thus their strategy will differ. Many people don't want a smartphone. The avergage Joe gets totally scared when given a "complicated" device like a smartphone and doesn't use it to its full potential.
is wise, they have kept their devices unique, innovative and kind of exclusive. Why follow Nokia?

choose to flood the market, they will become just like Nokia...lost in a flurry of insignificant "common" devices with new cases.
research and innovate when a new handset is released and others follow...remember the interview that Eldar did with the
engineer? He stated that the release dates for the new devices are always when other manufacturers are caught off guard. This means that the new smartphone will definitely be cutting edge and may take everyone by surprise again.
As for changing the OS, Palm OS devices were dropped from Sony's line up and they don't make PDA's anymore. So don't expect to see that implemented anytime soon.
Symbian UIQ is the best method right now and
have invested in this technology significantly therefore they will not drop it now.
Well these are my thoughts...and i am not flaming anyone!

A cheaper smartphone would be nice although I don't think it will have a touchscreen. A new series could happen but doesn't SE use enough letters already :-) UIQ3 is going to be good and I wouldn't worry about nokia taking over Symbian after all there are other companies that use UIQ like motorola.

to to consumer, it doesnt really matter what OS is in the phone. many smartphone buyers may just use the in-built functionality only.
but to manufacturer, it is crucial. the main benefit of series60 symbian is that u can leverage on existing software developer. if u take a look at succession of series60 phones, the hardware did not change but the stock functionality improved greatly. if u look closely, this improvement is achieved mostly by bundling 3rd party software.
if SE stuck with UIQ3, then it has to spend more money building apps on its own. The harder part is maybe to convince 3rd party developers to support UIQ3 when no UIQ3 phones are in the market.
So if no 3rd party software support is forth coming, then maybe it made more financial sense for SE to continue with non-smartphone. Could this be the reason why no SE smartphone is in sight.
