What utter rot this thread is! This innane fixation with market share as the ultimate mark of success is both a waste of time and foolish.

SE have primarily concentrated on selling mid to high-end mobile phones, thus they have primarily focused upon those markets, which are able to afford such products e.g. Western Europe.

If one looks to Western Europe one would see that SE are in a very strong position and that they are building upon that strength and increasing the power of their brand.

Of course SE are not as big as Nokia in Africa or most of Asia; with the greatest respect, how many Africans will be handing over £500 for a mobile phone? One can't expect a company, which has been devoting a great deal of its resources towards high specification products to do well in markets where the vast majority of people cannot afford to buy them.

This is refelected in the overall global market share where Nokia's dominance of low-end markets vastly increases their market share. SE do very well in those markets where they are trying very hard to be successful, but most of their products are simply too expensive or have features that are not necessary in poorer markets.

SE are more of a regional player at the moment, not a true global force like Nokia or Samsung. From acorns ...

Look at SE's Premini 1. A little gem of a phone. Limited to the Japanese market. Just take a look at it and then judge SE.

Just a quick note on market share as someone who has worked in sales and marketing for 10 yrs... the point about market share is that yes its wonderfull to have the highest market share....however alot of companies that come later into the market have different goals regarding there total share of the market....SE will probably have a 'target' market share per annum which will be alot lower than that of the likes of Motorola or Nokia....they will base their performance on wether they achieve this market share or even exceed it...they will be realistic that at this point they cannot take the number one position but they will be slowly growing over the long term...much more sensible business sense and allows them to keep their feet on the ground and not release rubbish products that cause them problems!!
I have a Sony Clie UX-50....its a stunning PDA but Sony have now pulled out of the PDA market...the why they have done this is a contentious question but it won't of been a knee jerk reaction it will be a decision made on potential market possibilities and they just couldnt justify the investment...plus look at some of the SE phones...close to what a PDA can do and alot more profitable...so hopefully they are concentrating on the phones and making convergance devices that when they come out will blow our minds away...such as a PDA/Phone with 3G....

Just my thoughts

@Metaphor

Your are unlikely to see that from SE for a year or so unfortunately.

Your points regarding market share are well made and very salient. People have to stop assuming that low global market share is somehow an indication of failure.

@scots..
Thanks for the remarks...people do tend to think that a company is only successfull if they have a high market share....look at B&0 not a massive market share but they do very well
Yeah I know the PDA/Phone combo is a while away....however got 12 months with my new V800 to go so happy to wait

@Metaphor. You are right. SE Believes there is no future in PDAs. They believe smartphones are where the future lays as far as smart devices go. As far as SE marketing goes, in such a market dominated by the likes of Siemens and Nokia, SE first has to make a name for itself by providing Quality handsets which it has done. The low end of the market is next on the agenda.

@Metaphor

What is very interesting to note is that SE are doing very well in Western Europe from a position of almost a standing start a few years ago.

i do think your right market share isnt the be all and end all. perhaps people look at great products that were the best in there field yet no longer exist. look at betamax it was a far superior system to vhs let vhs won though. i do accpet that this was a format war and different to the phone world, but there will be other examples.
on the b+o comment agreed however they make a large sum of cash per product, compared to main stream sellers of similar products se dont they make about the same as the others in the field
but your right market share isnt everything

@slattery69

SE have built aname for themselves though, a name that is very much associated with quality. Whether SE's products are more expensive than others people more or less see them as being a manufactuere, which delivers high quality products and thy will perhaps expect to pay a little more for that.

I fail to understand how the Vhs betamax saga relates to what we are discussing. or was that a bad example?
