@786KBR
Edge is not a faster GPRS version. Its a modulation technique allowing higher throughtput of GPRS data in GSM networks (more GPRS data can be fit in same bandwidth). In 3G networks other modulation technique is used to to fit even more GPRS data than is possible with Edge.

@vanquish: I do agree that SE had an incredible slow start with 3G. We do not have 3 over here so I can't really tell, but I assume that since even in Western Europe there is yet no real competition on the 3g market, the handfull of 3g operators can do pretty much what they please - force one to buy only the handsets endorsed by them, and so on. This just may be the case with the Z1010 not being available on 3 as you say, and it might also present an explanation as to what happended to SE's slow start. Networks such as 3 might also have signed exclusivity contracts with Nokia for marketing Nokia's 3g handsets - because Nokia, UNLIKE SE, are in a dominating position and hence can bargain.
however, SE are making an incredible return to the 3g market. must confess i didn't think they had it in them. they just need to keep up the pace and be a little quicker in solving the various issues that SE users encounter (and they are bound to encounter, especially since 3g is still a pioneering technology). And they also DEFINITELY should take benefit from Ericsson's extensive experience in implementing 3g systems. Here, /// have actually won the contract for deploying Connex's (offically Vodafone, actually, as of late).

They are making a return but the K600 wont be out until Q3 2005! It should be hitting the stores right now if they want to make an impact!

A lot of things are happening behind those little screens. You can’t expect warp speed coming from a little processor anyway. The mobile cameras are useless. Can’t wait to get rid of mine.

When it comes to edge enabled handsets, se has made a huge mistake. Its equivalent to the one nokia made when they failed to realise the market potential of clamshells, in other words they WILL lose a lot of customers. K750 and w800 are good but i wouldnt wanna buy a phone thats lacks in basics when coming to technology...its an event of extremely low probability that a non-edge mobile would succeed my k7 and edge is the reason why my next phone would probably not be a

unless they manage to surprise me

I think the reason SE held the Z1010 back away from
3 was because they knew of 3's poor service.
SE wouldnt want to tarnish their very first major 3G release phone as being next to useless due to the crappy network it was released on. Thats probably why they waited longer until it could be released on all the major operator's 3g networks.
I would say SE had a good start in 3G, maybe not over companies like LG and Motorola, but they certainly did over Nokia. The only 3G Nokia phones were pretty poor (7600 & 6650), compare those to phones like the Z1010 and the V800.
Sure, Nokia now have the 6630, but still no integrated video calls without the call stand. The 6680 is meant to rectify this, but thats still about 3 months from release AFAIK.
SE have been offering video calls out of the box for many months now, so how are they behind their biggest rival Nokia ?
