Norton I find bloated and intrusive plus it can be a major system hog. It has good virus checking abilities though. If a client insists on Norton I normally try to give them NAV 2002.

Mcafee is ok but I dont recommend. Cycovision alluded to a few of the problems I have with it.

Avg does a decent job and the basic version is free but I have known it to miss a little too many viruses

The one I recommend most clients try is Kaspersky. Its virus checking abilities are up there with Norton. It doesn't 'invade' a PC and is very straight forward to manage for even non technical people.

Oh God... I hate Norton!!! Norton products SUCK!!! They're so friggin' slow... they're not effective at all... maybe they can block out C-Brain or some other archaic virus, but that's about it. They eat up more resources than MS Office and Adobe Photoshop.

Macs... well, honestly, I can't see all the hype over Macs. I have the new Dual G5... and well... it's ok. Nothing to write home about. I wasn't blown away by it. Still end up using my Dual P4 as my main machine, with the Mac only to open Mac files, or when my PC is rendering something big and I wanna surf around.

I REALLY hate Mac mice. It's about time they came up with a 2-button mouse. Yes, you can just plug in any USB mouse... but wtf?!?!?! Is a 2-button mouse that technically confusing to Mac users?!??! The mouse the G5 comes with tracks like $#!+ as well. I tried an el-cheapo Logitech optical and it tracks much better, I wonder if the new 2-button Mac mouse will perform better.

The whole mouse-issue is kinda different for PC users. I've used a mac for ages and I personally much prefer having only the one mouse button. My mum also seems to think so, as she has no trouble using intuition to use a mac, but if put in front of a pc, she needs written instrucctions to get it to work (!)

NOD32 is the best. At least PCmag thinks so, and I'm going to renew my subscription and hopefully still be a ble to get a free version of NOD32 I use spybot search and destroy and don't use IE whenever possible

This is true. NOD32 is the best in virus detection at least from the ones I have tried, including Norton, McAfee, Karpesky.
But not only this - NOD32 is by far the best in terms of using system resources. It is the liter of all, it is the quickest, it scans the PC in 20% of the time that Norton scans. What is the meaning of buying a fast modern computer and install Norton? It occupies so many system resources, making computer crawling. NOD32 is highly recommended.

I've found some relevant reviews:

"AVG 7.0" only got 4star (out of 6) on PCPRO -

http://www.pcpro.co.uk/buyer-[....]=anti+virus+anti+virus+viruses

"AVG's only notable shortcoming is the lack of an icon in the Windows Taskbar. Without this, there's nothing to tell you if the software is running.

Overall

AVG does remarkably well for a free product - although we were a bit concerned by the infrequency of the updates, given the rate at which new viruses are unleashed. Still, if you don't go in for high-risk activities, such as downloading vast numbers of files from the Internet, AVG offers reasonable protection for free."

Ah but that was in October 2003...

Where else has credible reviews, anyone?!

Okay I've now done a little research...

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1371096,00.asp
Norton AntiVirus 2004
gets 5* and the Editors choice.
This despite a "6.4%" slowdown.
Mind you their members hated it! (1.5 stars!)

* * *

http://www.pcmag.com/article2[....]1720842%2C00.asp#memberratings
NOD32 only got 4* because
"NOD32's vast number of configuration options may prove confusing for typical PC users"
BUT I fear I am probably a typical PC user!

* * *

Kaspersky Personal Security Suite 1.0
only got 3 stars:
REVIEW DATE: 03.17.05
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1777156,00.asp

"Suite's modules not integrated. Firewall doesn't protect against most leak test techniques. Firewall confirmation pop-ups awkward. Antispam allows too much spam into the in-box."

* * *

Actually it looks like NOD32 wins it, because almost all the member are a) slagging off the editor b) they mostly seem to love NOD32!

NOD32 Antivirus System 2.0
REVIEW DATE: 11.08.04
http://www.pcmag.com/article2[....]1720842%2C00.asp#memberratings

My only concerns are
a) How often are new virus patches released
b) Will I be able to configure the damned thing, being as I know very little about this subject - or can I just use all the defaults?!

Oh Hell's Teeth!
NOD32 turns out to be incompatible with Google Desktop Search (which is one of my most useful applications!)

I guess that's the end of NOD32.

I'll try AVG, then.

Damn it!

AVG is now fighting with my Roxio - which I had no idea is installed on my machine and which doesnt appear in my control panel's Add/Remove programs. I have no idea which version of the software is on my machine

AVG generated this message on Roxio's site:

"An update is available.

Thank you for submitting an error report. The error was likely caused by:

Roxio's CDR4 (cdr4_xp.sys)

Roxio, Inc. is the manufacturer. An update is available that may correct the problem you reported. To obtain the update and more information from the Roxio, Inc. Web site please click here."

But I dont have any serial number with which to get my upgrade on the Roxio site!

Now what - Kaspersky?!
