Illegal = something which has a law against it
Which implies that there is some law enforcement agency which does the policing job or intends to do so.

When you buy a laptop, there are two things involved. The hardware itself and a third party software. Both are components sold independently (though most people feel they just pay for hardware)
When you change the OS, there is nothing you do that is illegal as far as the hardware vendor is concerned. You have bought the hardware and you are free to do whatever you want with it. So if you remove win and install linux, its ok. However, if u install win xp in place of win 95, there are issues. You will need to ensure that you have license to use win xp. The enforcement here is in form of the license you accept while installing windows. The enforcer is microsoft since they lose money.

For SE... first they never have a license for their firmware (do they mention anything. In fact I have never come across any firmware which is bound by licensing terms). As a consumer I am just installing linux on my phone. If the hardware supports it, its all OK. As for the linux in question, if you ever get a version of OS which looks like win xp but doesnt refer to microsoft anywhere and doesnt show any license; then the onus of any illegal installation lies with the source which provided the OS; that too when MS can prove that it is win xp.

Another twist here is that if SE tries to contest this, they might even be dragged into a legal conflict of intentionally not providing the device to their full potential. Remember, immediate updates to OS software are provided, even if they involve some nominal cost. Mostly you dont have to change your laptop to get a new OS. So max that SE can ask for is a nominal price for a new firmware (however no company has till date sold firmware as far as I know), but cant contest otherwise.

Thats what differentiates software from firmware.

I hope there's a fix soon. I'm about to bust at the seams. I would do it now, but I can't see myself sacrificing my poor little HBH-600.

gbrooks3... do you know what they are trying to fix with the BT? are the trying to fixed the new BT stuff, or revert back to the regular P900 BT?

no reverting back wont happen, i doubt it will make any difference. Also i believe the same problem has been reported on a real p910i phone so i think its a teething problem that all.

have no fear i am sure this will be fixed for both converted phones and the real thing.

gbrooks3...
in your opinion, and i know it's probably hard to estimate, how long do you think it'll take to fix the problem and get a new version ready for flashing? Also, have you flashed any phones back to original p900 firmware? does everything function normally once flashed back?

It looks like the HBH BT headset problem with the REAL P910's was just a scare.

Both Bengalboy's and fijbert's P910's work fine with HBH (and other) BT headsets.

yeh everything works fine. i am sure a solution will be released soon because the person who makes the files has a p900 of his own and is very interested in getting it right.

it seems that both bluetooth firmwares are the same for p900 and p910i so only a small change to the phones GDFS will be needed.

Very well put a_p_a_n_d_e_y.

I just thought that SE paid a % for the firmware on each handheld. Upgrades are always free. I also thought the reason they dont sell them or you have never seen them for sale because they make handhelds thinking that no one flashes them, hence why the warning on "fighter"'s site before entering into it.

So I guess if I made a phone I could get a free OS for it without paying for it then

According to the whitepaper relased by Sony Ericsson outlining the differences between the P900 and P910, the two have different BT chipsets.
