@scotsboyuk:

for point (6), i'm only refering to high end segment in general (i.e K750 price range). of course, i agree with your point if it is cheaper/pre-pay phone.

@Wyrus:
Quote:I can assure you that I have more functionality with my K700 and the java apps I have than 90% of smartphone users who even do not know they can download, or how to transfer, additional apps.

sorry but I can't resist having a go at this. Are u saying that 90% of smartphone users (incl. S60/UIQ/WM) are more inept than you?

Your statement may hv some chance of reality if all smartphone users are above 50 years old. Even then given the fact that in Europe and part of asia, home internet penetration rate is above 50%, it would be a miracle for this to happen.

That's a fair point, but even then there is still a certain amount of lazzaire faire on the part of the Nokia customer. I would agree that those who know what they are looking for and who aren't just changing their phone because they have been offered a good upgrade deal may decide to choose Nokia, but there also a large number who just stay with Nokia because it is the easy option.

That is something a sweeping statement to say the least! I don't really think it very fair to label someone technically inept just because they are over 50 years old.

What do inernet penetration rates have to do with a lack of interest in smartphone features?

I think u r taking my response to wyrus out of context. I'm not labelling anyone inept. In fact, the reverse is true. I'm saying those above 50 years are very capable in making full use of smartphone if they wanted to because the internet is just a mouse click away.

It is always your conjecture that those who bought smartphone are not interested in smartphone features. You use this as the basis in all your arguments. I doubt very much this point can be proven in a statistically manner. I may be wrong. If you have any statistics to back this up, then your argument can be much more convincing.

Without direct statistical proof, the opposite (i.e. more and more users are interested in smartphone features) may be true. I have brought out many indicative factors (in this and other thread) which can provide this indirect prove. E.g.

1) S60 sales has increased tremendously in excess of 200% annually. This is much more that the general growth of phone sales.
2) Handango is reporting a monthly increase of 20% in the sales of Symbian based software.
3) Continuous increase in new software targetted at S60.
4) Dedicated section for S60 (with many postings) in many forums.
5) Adoption of S60 by other manufacturers such as Siemens, Panasonic Samsung and few others.

There is little or no statistical proof of anything that you have argued thus far.

Therefore, it is a bit rich for you to demand statistical proof of scotsboyuk.

And by statistical proof, I do not mean making up figures that sounds good to support your argument, I mean quoting your sources.

In fact, the vast majority of your arguments are based on theory and speculation and very little else, as far as I can see. What you appear to have failed to realise is that eloquence does not compensate for your arguments being based entirely on fiction.

Very prophetic. Well with all these stats at your fingertips, one wonders why you haven't chosen to back up your arguments previously. Too busy patronising people, and trying to sound like a Red Indian Chief...?

Actually, your stats are quite interesting. I am amazed that PalmOne and HP have such a large share of the market - very interesting. I am also intrigued by statistics that categorise the HP6315 and the Nokia 7610 in the same category of mobile device. These people must really know their onions.

Incidentally, were there any sales figures for those other shining examples of Series 60 mastery (the Panasonic X700, Sendo X, Siemens SX1 etc)? I didn't pick any up from your link, only I know that those that have been released here (in the UK) have completely bombed. Looks like even such a fantastic UI can't save failing manufacturers....

edit: oooh...something else interesting that I have found from your Handango sales link:

"It is also interesting that much of this activity is currently skewed towards to Sony Ericsson P800 and P900 where Clint describes the average customer as "software hungry." This hunger saw software sales for the P800 and P900 achieve the highest revenue for any device in the second half of 2003. That is not to say that sales of Software for Series 60 were not significant, the Nokia 3650 and Nokia 7650 were in the top 5 phones adding software during 2003."

This seems to me to indicate that serious smartphone users, who will use the full functionality of their device, use a SonyEricsson, whereas those buying Nokia and others are either more interested in the non-smart capabilities of their handset, or have bought a smartphone by accident, in the sense that they just happened to like the look of something that happened to be considered a smartphone.

Either way, that is using real statistical evidence to support your argument, rather than just churning out figures that you may quite easily have made up - perhaps you could learn something, Chief Wallah Wallah
