Prom1, nice to see you again!

Okay I'm a little harsh on EDGE and 3G, simply because it is expensive here in Australia. Also, I find GPRS about the speed of dialup - which with the cost of data here is all the speed i need most of the time.

Once data is cheaper I will start looking for more speed. I agree that EDGE is relevant in certain markets, all I'm saying is it's not fair to compare edge phones against non-edge because they meet the needs of different markets. However I will grudgingly accept that SE performance on EDGE and 3G handsets is poor. The K600 is a good 3G phone other than not having expandable memory, if it had expandable memory it would be comparable to a K750 with edge. The SE edge phones are long in the tooth now (although in america you have the S710, I'd be happy enough with that). So SE have it covered, they just don't give much choice.

Regarding file transfer, yes Bluetooth is slow and USB is way faster, however since K750 doesn't seem to support usb 2.0, cable transfers are still slow. A USB2.0 card reader is the fastest file transfer option. I'm slack and use the cable mostly (when I said I don't need the cable, I meant I don't need the drivers once they are installed - I have three cables on three different computers in three locations where I use the K750 the most).

I find Bluetooth perfectly fine for syncing, installing games, sending wallpaper, ringtones etc. Sending anything larger than a few hundred kb's needs cable or better, unless I'm being really slack and can't be bothered reaching for the cable (I've been known to send 30MB plus over bluetooth!)

Regarding DBpoweramp, it's only the Mp3 encoder that is on trial. The AAC codecs are COMPLETELY FREE! As is the Real converter, which I use to eliminate all real content! (Note use Real Alternative if you want a real audio player without installing Real Player - I also don't like Real). disc2phone offers free mp3 encoding....

I take you point re Real firmware level support. I also agree that it should be eliminated where ever possible.

Regarding eBooks, I read heaps of stuff via bookreaders, have never found it particularly painful (I do have good eyesight though), and bookreader has excellent interface for moving between pages and bookmarks, so I find it quite suitable.

Quote: "Another note just how does one create ebooks from MS
Word to be viewable in Tequila cat >> I'd love to give this a try on
my 176x208 screen."

- just save the word doc as a text file (you will lose all formatting features - bookreader can only load text files), then use the "shell" application that comes with bookreader to install the text file in a jar file. (http://tequilacat.nm.ru/dev/br/1.6.10/). Also keep in mind, if you save a word doc as HTML, then send it to the phone, it will be saved in the "saved webpages" folder, where you can view all the formatting (bold underline etc). Same with Excel files.

Quote: "TransFlash kinda scares me though, no mention of maximum
size & right now MS Duo Pro is at 2GB >> music phone the K750i
wins hands down. "

Transflash is even more proprietary than Memory Stick, and more expensive. MS Duo Pro supports up to 32GB. Sony claim the K750 will be able to read the 4GB cards that are coming out soon, and I suspect even larger cards will be readable as they come out.

actually imagine a voice behind it. Even the tone is calm cool and
collective. I love disagreeing with this guy because its always an
intelligent converse. "

hehe! sometimes with mib I don't sound cool calm and collected!! , but I agree he is a worthy opponent, and VERY occasionally, I find I agree with him (don't get any ideas mib )

1st off many thanks for the Tequilacat tips; will give it a try now that I got a day off of work.

Good to know dbpoweramp is doable for AAC files. Right now I'm using iTunes to do the mp3/aac file codec changeovers; works a treat. Agreed on Real software - I seriously despise it.

Re: TransFlash comparo to MS Duo Pro I agree fully. But hang onto your hats Sony today announced the MS Micro to compete with the TransFlash, but will come with an adapter and is compatible with other MS devices. whew. Glad to see Sony really went the distance with their MS formats >> now a standard just like SD.

Why 80%? why not 90% or 100%? Do you have conclusive evidence or are you plucking the figure out of thin air to conveniently make your argument plausible?

@max_wedge

Good. W800 got good functions. So if a general buyer do a side-by-side comparison between K750/W800 and 3250, then he/she will see that both are equally matched. However, the price of 3250 will around K750 and cheaper than W800. So I ask you a question. What does W800/K750 have to fend of the 3250?

@mib1800.

Most people are in agreement, from what I have read on Esato, agree that the 3250 is one of the worst looking handsets yet to come from Nokia.

On that premise alone the K750 buries it!!!!

goldenface, exactly!

If two things are equal (assuming one does not need smartphone or EDGE), then what will be the deciding factor? Style and ergonomics of course! Goodbye Nokia 3250...(man, that twist would seriously shit me off)

Prom1, right on about the sony memory stick. I'm not a big fan of proprietary, but there is no standard anyway (there are 7-8 common memory card formats), and atleast Sony make a reasonable effort to ensure backwards and sideways compatibility.

doesnt all Nokia look like shit to you? Many people ~esato are in agreement that K750 looks like design from the recycle bin. Ditto for W800 which looks like a kiddy phone. On this premise alone, 3250 buries the K750/W800. I hope you see the idiocy of this line of argument. hahaha..

that's probably why you have SE fans and Nokia fans, many people will gravitate to the phones that appeal to their sense of asethetics and ergonomics, all other things being equal.

Both SE and Nokia are perfectly competent at designing phones, each has good phones to choose from so why not stick with the company that makes the phones you like?

I don't buy SE phones because I'm a blind fanatic, I buy them because they always seem to appeal to me more than any other brand. I'm not narrow minded and I always look at other brands when buying. Example I bought a moto v525 when SE only had the T610 because the V525 had 5 MB memory compared to t610's 2MB. But then the K700 came out and SE won me back with it's 41MB

good point. I just want to add that apart from fans, there are a very significant number of buyers who are indifferent to brand. To them, price, design and functionality will determine their choice. So what do K750/W800 have that will tempt this group of buyers? I dont doubt K750/W800 is gonna be a best seller for SE just like K700. However, in terms of sales volume, K700 is still several folds below that of competing model like 6230. So do K750/W800 has the power to outperform K700 by several folds? How would K750/W800 fare against tough competition like 6680, N70, 6280, 6270?

I do not dislike SE in anyway. However, I dont think it is great either. When you have Sony in the name, impression is that of leading edge technology. Just that it is not. SE dont even have a mass-market smartphone. Maybe it is the sign of the time just like Sony has lost the home electronics segment.

personally I think Sony's claim to fame is not that they are "leading edge". Sony make reliable consumer electronics with excellent ergonomics and strong feature sets. However there are many oem's who make higher end equipment than Sony.

Where I think they better many competitors is in compatibility across their range, reliability, features and ergonomics (jog shuttle anyone?).

However they certainly aren't knew to innovation - sony walkman cassette player, jug shuttle control, mini-disc format (the FIRST digital music player), higher capacity memory sticks than competitors, the first cd based games console (cartridge is dying), the list goes on.

I don't like the proprietary bullshit they go on with, but beyond that, I really admire their engineering. If you compare them to cars they are not quite a BMW, maybe more a peugeot. Still excellent engineering but cheap enough to compete in the mass consumer market

@max_wedge:

hope SE is not as complacent as Sony. since the T610/P800/T68, SE didnt have anything that is seen to be leading edge in terms of technology. And that was a long time ago. This is not good for a company which wants to thrive on sales targeted at techies. btw: sony products are priced at a premium

coming back to 3250 vs K750/W800.

By the time 3250 come out, the K750/W800 would be considered "old" model. So 3250 would have no problem against the K750/W800. Unless SE come out with K750/W800 replacement by then which I think is unlikely given the track record of SE.

I think the more immediate concern for K750/W800 is not to let N70/N90/6280/6270 steal the limelight. Unfortunately this may be difficult since K750/W800 have no outstanding features (it dont even hv 3G) compared to the nokias except the SE name.
