WiFi is 5 years old technology first launch on Apple’s 802.11b-based AirPort system, Bluetooth is 7 years old. If the technology is old in PI why aren’t so populated? I checked the wireless availability by City and it’s not a whole lot.
What im trying to convey is to shade some light (not to put some down) with the assumption/or mind set that the US is lagging with the Cell Phone technology. Like I said we’re in the same boat when it comes to mobile technology.

USA was using amps before while the rest of world started w/ etacs....
then etacs shifts to gsm (digital) while amps stayed as amps for couple of years more. Japan and korea started with cdma right away..
maybe this the reason why USoA was behind BEFORE
popularity of gsm gains because of nice phones, changable ringtones etc.. and the rest of the world chose GSM over CDMA BEFORE.
now USA and Can are using cdma which i believe it is better then gsm- clearer sound, faster data transmission... and gsm 3g are baesd on cdma... wcdma or cdma2000
advantage and disadvantage of GSM is you can change phone every now and then, while you have to bring your cdma units to telecom provider for them to reprogram

Not being popular doesn't mean it's not being used or not available.
The reason it's not popular is because the majority of the Filipinos still has more things to think about than WiFi or Bluetooth - like surviving day by day, or wondering where the Philippines is heading to.

AMPS was commercially available in 1992 and cloning continued until 1999...
ETACS was commercially available in 1993 and died officially in 2003
GSM was commercially available in the 1994
TDMA was commercially available in 1995 then died in 1996
CDMA was commercially available in 1997 but died sometime in 2000
ACeS or Asia Cellular Satellite, an affordable satellite phone service with dual mode GSM had been available since 2001...
We were toying around with Bluetooth sometime in 2002 (some of them have been documented here in Esato)...
Dagupan City had citywide wifi since 2001.. (there are many undocumented wifi hotspots in Manila alone)
However, money to buy the gadgets to run these platforms is still not available...

Guys this is not who have the technology who is superior. I’m just glad we have this board to reach out and enhanced the knowledge for those (like myself) unaware of the technology is there, readily available. The next time come around (being a balik bayan) we will prosper the Wireless & Technology hospitality the moment we set our foot to our childhood town, peace.

I don't think there was an offense taken Marino... we just want to blabber around here... technology development is so fast that one day its usage would be the great equalizer in the development of countries.
It's funny though that pinoys like us just want to tinker around and find loopholes in the technology available that its legal deployment is sometimes affected...
take for example cloning of AMPS, cloning of GSM cards, extending the range of Wifi beyond the legal distance, using mobile phones to trigger devices, using bluetooth to send viruses, finding free access points in gprs and abusing its usage, sending thousands of garbage text messages a day when it was free, creating scams through text messages, etc, etc.
With the deployment of EVDO, a lot of us in Esato have actually suscribed to it not because we need the service yet but mainly to find out more and experiment with it...

EVDO has a very convincing ability to deliver a consistent 800Kbps of Data and for the Supercharge EVDO is a guaranteed to 2Mbps +. It’s a good thing to have when you are on the go!
Speaking of experiment, yup the good old days of AMPS era back on 89 I come to appreciate the magic of electronics. With this EVDO experiment count me in, I can be help from eeprom, prom, small scale to large scale VHDL, to ALTERA.

* 10-digit MIN (Mobile Identification Number)
* 8- to 15-digit IMSI (International Mobile Service Identifier)
* 8- to 15-digit MDN (Mobile Directory Number)
* 5-digit CDMA SysID number
Insiders in PILTEL used to sell those and resulted in the demise of AMPS
