I totally agree with you. I do however think that the Chancellor of the Exchequer (whomever that might be when the analogue switch-off comes) could reasonably be expected to offer some type of rebate in the budget to accomodate for people who are not financially able to fund the switch-over for themselves. £30 for a DVB-T receiver is not of much consequence to me, however I do believe that there are large swathes of the population to whom £30 is a considerable amount. For this reason, I don't believe that the analogue swith-off will be hastened in any way. The Government does not want to be seen to be cutting off television to impoverished people across the country. The only way I can see of hastening the analogue switch-off would be if DVB-T receivers were offered free-of-charge or at severely discounted rates to low-income households.

While it would be open to abuse (think how many would end up on eBay) a voucher scheme for everyone to get a suitable FTV receiver would probably suffice, rather like when Five funded the retuning of loads of VCRs before they launched.

I am sure the industry can see the advantages, so it needn't cost that much overall - for all the benefits that new services will bring (including new taxes to the Government!).

Of course, it isn't likely to happen in reality. It's just a joke that we're talking about digital television so much in the UK but will be YEARS behind almost everywhere else.

NEC made a pronouncement about this TV feature in mobile phones way back in 2002 that by 2003 they will be the very FIRST to realease such feature . . . . it's already 2006 now and I haven't seen their product being launched in the market !

TV has been done before, of the analogue variety, with limited success. With digital, the picture remains pretty stable for more of the time. However, even with a good picture, most people don't carry pocket televisions (very much a fad from the late 80's to early 90's).

Now we have interactive services, interest has returned, but I still only watch mobile TV when I'm really bored. It's anything but compulsive, although I suppose being able to watch the football tonight (if I'd been away from home/pub) might have appealed - if I could have seen the ball and coped with 15 frames per second!!

"We are delighted to see that the Open Air Interface (OAI) implementation guidelines which we published in August 2005 can serve as a concrete starting point for interoperability. I don't know how I missed this as it was back in February.

So it sounds like and Nokia are investing in DVB-H as one of the key technologies.
