it looks like you need really good speakers for those tones to work, on my mpx220 my 46 old father could hear them as good as me (i am soon 17!!)

I'd have thought just putting your phone into silent vibrate-only mode would be simpler.
MP3'ing the effect wrecks it a lot as well. If you want a clean version, go grab the tone generator from:
http://www.archive.org/details/tucows_341419_NCH_Tone_Generator
You can generate sinewaves of whatever frequency you like and save them as a plain .WAV file.
