It seems we waited a very long time for the 990i, now we are being asked to wait even longer for simple issues of stability.

My 910 was solid, and still usable today.

I just hope SE gets it right with the 1000. They've got such a great history, it would be sad to lose it.

NO!

SE cheated consumers with this release. They took my hard earned money. i was a happy p990i user (at least i tried) for about 2 months. waiting for SE to release a stable firmware. I just cant stand the occasional crashes, kern errors.

someone mentioned:
"It's chunky, like all P series phones, but the P990 oozes class..."

when it was officially released here in the Philippines last Aug 26, 2006, yes using p990i in public 'oozes class' since it was released at php45,690.00 (about $915) look everyone, im using the most expensive phone in the market..

after a week, p990i prices kept on dropping.. i can get it at php33k ($660) after 2 weeks of release, I am not holding the most expensive phone anymore, i am holding a piece of junk.

now, when we see p990i users, we just discretely laugh at them... we even see people complaining about the p990i in public, we see faces that thier phone crashed while having coffee at starbucks. a friend once mentioned, she wouldnt be surprised if one day, we see someone throws his/her p990i on the street.

p990i should have been a very powerful smartphone only if SE released the FINAL version not this "half-baked' unit.

My first ever p series and it was a nightmare and i will never buy another p series.

and what did i get after i luckily dispose my p990i?

i decided to go back to Nokia.. yes, i got a Nokia N93, out of the box updated to the latest firmware and since day one, i never experienced any problems. the phone is working just like it should be.

Nightmare over... Dreaming of N95 now.. maybe next year.

1. Every new OS had a stability issue. WM5 this time last year was not bullet proof
2. The P910 represents 3 years of development of UIQ2, starting with the P800
3. a Linux Smartphone OS has still not seen the light of day as building Smartphones OSs is not simple
4. M$'s Vista has been delayed by 2 years

@antz88c

By 26th August lots of people reported problems so why did you buy a P990? Also new phones are always over priced so why did you not wait a week? Also my Generic World P990 is stable for business use so not sure which FW you were using. Finally, the N93 was released before the P990 and was buggy initially and the latest FW has just been made avilable. I suspect it will be around 3 months since the N93 was released before stable FW was released, the same projection has been made for the P990. The N93 is very different from the P990 so not sure why you bought a P990 if you wanted the functionality of the N93, which has been avaiable for a while now.

I concur, the P990i is not worth the wait, it was announced with great fanfare in October 2005 and was available here in Singapore in August 2006. Nearly one year of waiting.

The out of the box firmware was utter rubbish with problems with sms/text and reboots to name a few problems. Updated the firmware of the P990i twice in less than one month and even the basic of giving a clear thumbnail icons for photos was not solved as the thumbnails were blurry and pixelated.

Don't forget the soft speakers on the P990i and the unreadable screen on sunny days.

I don't remember reading any reviews before the P990i was launched talking about the reboots and RAM issues. Only the one by Adnhk1 about the RAM issues.

Sold off my P990i after a frustrating one month of using it.

Right now, the current P990i users are still waiting for a firmware update. Keep waiting guys.

Hi Jah,
We all know that this incarnation of UIQ3 is new and different but from the look of things for every happy P900 or M600 user there are many times more that are not. If this is because their expectations are to high or unrealistic is debatable. The fact that some are able to use and make their units stable and usable whilst others can't suggests the user needs to know what he is doing and manage what he does to achieve this. The fact that there are major problems with the new OS and the current hardware configurations is not open to debate it is a fact. Yes firmware updates have greatly improved the performance and stability of the M600 and has helped the P990 with the promise of more to come, but IMO there is only so much firmware upgrades can achieve.

I bought my M600i just over a month ago as i really thought i missed a touchscreen and i did think it was a great looking phone. I have had no crashes or freezes as i am running R9A and SwissManger, E- Mail normal collection and sending works well, Web Browsing is also fast with either Opera or Opera Mini, the photo Album is also good. Its Killer feature IMO is the Music Player with a pair of HBH-DS970's. The UI is not fast it is slower than on my N93, bluetooth is not stable synching is hit or miss, the screen is great in the right lighting conditions but outdoors it can become invisible far too easily. The M600i is used as a Music Player and for voice calls on my non data Sim everything else my N93 does and does better in my experience. The Safari based browser is faster to navigate a gives a better view IMO, the screen is readable in virtually all conditions, Video playback is much smoother and of a higher quality, e-mail is handled just as well, the music player is good but requires an adapter and your own headphones to really appreciate the quality so loses to the M600's wireless abilities on this. Tom Tom 6 runs smoothly with no delays and is very visable in a car cradle and the volume is more than loud enough @75%. My N93 now with 2gb mini SD is now my number one phone again and there really is no contest. I really wanted my M600i to be my main phone due to its size and a touchscreen but for now that's just not possible IMO.

Marc

I guess there are some that are really lucky to have a p990i with only one problem the memory management like me . But with the help of the smpro my RAM stays to 10mb to 13 after cleaning. My messages, camera, calendar, alarm are working perfectly. I bought my phone with the latest firmware already installed.

@Dogmann and others

so many people here and at my-symbian bought retail P990s and M600s as soon as their were available and reported many problems. I really do not accept the point about lack of information on the stability of the UIQ3 OS on the P990 - users from Sweden have been actively posting from early August (eg Johnex). I, Masseur and Sleepyhead (to name a few) were early users of the M600 and reported many issues. This is so annoying as many of us spend a lot of money and time to get good qulaity info to people as early as possible. Masseur even started a thread on the TyTN as he was disappointed with his P990 within a few days (around 16th August). By the way I have never had BT stabillity issues with my M600 for syncing etc, with any firmware.

The M600 and N93 are aimed at different markets. If you like and prefer the N93 good - you've found the device that is right for you.

I was waiting for this phone for ages but once i saw M600 i knew p990 was out. And then i saw w950i which got my attention so now i am a owner of W950 and i know it was worth the wait.

Really only thing it do not have is camera and WLAN. Both i can be without.
Camera sucks on phones anyway and i hardly use it and WLAN is worthless unelss u can use for calling and such but for internet i have laptop so all and all i think w950 is so much superior to P990 in the matter of size and design.
Its a PDA with 4G of storage. What else do u need. For me atleast it was worth the wait

Jah, i've read good and bad reviews but went on my purchase. i never compared n93 and p990i. Two different platforms and im not stupid. Out of the box my n93 came with the initial firmware. Updated to only the 2nd firmware release by Nokia and the phone is very stable. While, p990i release 2 firmware already in a month's time. It may fixed the bugs but still the phone is still buggy.

the thread is about 'was it worth the wait' we are giving our own opinions and how come you're airing your unsolicited comment?

esato, my-symbian, allaboutsymbian contain a lot of complaints how buggy p990i is. Business or pleasure use p990i just failed to deliver on my daily use. Face it!

i usually buy the phone that interest me the day it is released. I do my homework prior to purchase. It so happen, p990i is all fanfare and hype.
