It's gotta be the encoding, like someone said further up, it's as if it's loading the whole file like it needs to get to the end before it can start, when it should really just read the first bit and stream the rest on the fly.

I'll play around with different encoders over the weekend

good idea. encoding is 1 possibility. maybe the bottom line is our expensive phones cant play simple videos and we'll have to admit defeat.

I encoded a dvd with ImTOO DVD to 3GP converter. The filesize of the movie is around 450 Mb. The mediaplayer crashes when trying to play the videofile. Both Video and Audio is MPEG-4 (512 mbit/s)
Screensize: 320x240.

Card: Sandisk 4.0Gb.

Ive got a genuine UltraII 4gb sandisk and I've got lag recording vids from the camera. Playing mp4s has no lag but takes around 2minutes to load a 100 mb vid file.

go figure :S

this all seems inconsistent. i suspect it has to do with memory usage and fw. which means it also depends on how many programs you have on your phone and the space that's taken up. i guess there's no way to really figure this out.

I have always had a lag with videos. I gathered that the longer the actual running time of the video whether it be 3GP or MP4 there is still a lag. I put it down to processing, the phone may just take a while to run through the length of the clip...

4gb cards also are great in this little toy, its always best to buy genuine items from shops, buying on the cheap from say "Ebay" may cause you more problems than its worth.
