to be honest i don't know the ins and outs of O2, but knowing another network inside out i'm fairly confident i could get my phone blacklisted without having a crime number!
unfortunately this world is going downhill. not saying that rookwise would do anything like that, just saying it can be done.

At Vodafone u can report a phone lost just by phonin them or goin into store!!! They dont ask to see a lost property number as the police have stopped producin these for lost mobile phones!!!
The only way police will give u a reference number is a crime reference number which means it would need to be stolen etc not lost...
If u have rookwises number the best thing to do would be to phone O2 and inform them you bought a phone from one of their customers and now its been reported stolen or lost to them and you suspect insurance fraud... they will investigate it very quickly if it means they have been scammed as well for a new phone...
Thats the last thing i would recommend ONLY! if rookwise doesnt reply within a month or so!...
